老板[lao ban]，这个称谓由来于南方，是先哲对工商中那些主导者的敬称。上土下匕是为老，门中有品乃为板。老板一词其实自古就有，南方人称“老板”，指的是商号的主人，也就是北方说的“掌柜，东家等等”的意思。老字取意老道。板字取意为商者应有品，所谓信则立；门中有品才可以称为板。所以称“老板”，本源在于这个词是对商家的警语。老板古时就写作“老板”，因为汉字的简化，一些字被同音、同意字所代替，“老板”现代写为“老板”。
