蛇[she]是脊索动物门、爬行纲下的一类动物。体细长,分为头、躯干和尾三部分,无四肢或在低等蛇类横裂的泄殖孔两侧有爪状的后肢遗迹;周身被鳞;头部形状各异,鼻孔位于吻侧,但终生海栖的海蛇科(Hydrophidae)种类则居于吻背;眼球外有保护性的透明皮肤,瞳孔圆形、垂直椭圆形或水平椭圆形,无活动性眼睑,晶体几呈圆球形;舌细长分叉;前颌骨(仅蟒科蛇类具齿)、上颌骨、腭骨、翼骨和齿骨上附生着齿尖后弯的牙齿,然而齿的大小、数目及其结构则随不同蛇种而异;尾部明显地短于头体长。
