零[ling]是汉语通用规范一级字（常用字）。“零”的古字作“霝”，始见于商代甲骨文。“霝”的甲骨文是雨字头下有三个方块，代表雨点。零的本义是零星的雨，由本义引申为雨、霜、露等降落。又由降落引申为落涕、泪，如：感激涕零。又由雨、霜、露等降落引申为凋落、凋零等。由本义又引申为零碎不整的。“零”又有数字义，指数的空位。“零”的数词义是近代产生的，古代汉语并没有这个含义。
