Well, that’s a really interesting question. You know, China has a super long history compared with most countries in the world. During those nearly five thousand years, generations changed, but the rules that influenced family members seemed to be fixed and strengthened. What has left me the deepest impression about one of those rules is that we shouldn’t directly call the full names of any family members who are older than us. Because, in our tradition, avoid calling one’s full names is a way of paying respect to the elder.
