Describe a thing that a wise person did/ a person who gives a clever solution to a problem
You should say:
Who he/she is 他/她是谁
When he did it 他什么时候做的
Where he did it 他在哪做的
And explain why do you think he is clever
The clever man I am going to tell you is my uncle, who works in a soap factory.
About 5 years ago, the factory introduced an advanced assembly line from abroad. This dramatically boosted its productivity. But soon after, workers found that it had an annoying drawback. Sometimes, the soap case came out without soap in it. This would damage the company’s image pretty hard, since a company that was not able to control the quality of its products could never win customers’ trust. Technicians tried a variety of high-tech devices, but gave up all of them because of budget limitation.
Then my uncle, an employee who had worked in the factory for more than ten years, came up with a quite simple solution. Why not put a high-power fan at the end of the assembly line. In this way, the soap case without soap in it would be blown away due to its lighter weight, while the qualified products would stay put. This method worked out perfectly and only cost 200 yuan.
That is why I think my uncle is wise. Faced with a complicated problem, he went deep into its nature and found a straightforward solution. While others believe a complex problem needs a complex answer ,and quite often, they get lost in seeking it.
Describe the last book you read
Describe an exciting book you have read,以及Describe a book you want to read again.
Describe the last book you read
You should say:
What type of book it was
What it was about
Where you read it
How you felt about the book
The book I am going to tell you is called “The Three-body problem”. It is science fiction written by Liu cixin, who is a famous writer in China. The book was published in 2006 and won the science fiction achievement award.
The story happened between the earth and an alien civilization called the three-body. Do not copy or repost it. Unlike the typical American movie where the alien suddenly invaded the earth and the earth army fought back, the three-body blocked the earth’s scientific progress and sponsored a group of people who welcomed them. In the end, a person found something that could threaten the alien’s survival and they agreed to coexist with the human on earth.
I read this book on my way home. It was a long train journey which took 25 hours. To avoid being bored, I bought this book at the train station and finished it on the train.
After reading this book, my feelings are quite complicated. I am glad that the two civilizations finally accept each other and live peacefully on earth. But this is under the condition of mutually assured destruction. I cannot imagine what would happen if one side finds a solution to the other’s threat.
Describe a country or city that you would like to live or work in the future
Describe a country or city that you would like to live or work in the future
You should say:
Where the country or city is
Why you want to live or work there
Who you like to live or work with
What you do to achieve your dreams
I am going to talk about Christchurch, which is a southern city located in New Zealand.
Last November I went to New Zealand for travel. We had a round trip there. The entire country was amazing for me, each place I stayed was a unique experience for me. But what left me the most memorable impression was when I was travelling at Christchurch.
The city wasn’t so big, probably an hour bus can take you to grasp what the city was like. There are two places that I especially fell in love with. One is at the downtown near the church. You know, nearly every resident there won’t forget that terrible memory when a severe earthquake had shaken the whole city and tore it into pieces. Do not copy or repost it. Not an exception for the church. Another place was the Canterbury Museum, where I’ve learnt a lot about the history of Maori and some wildlife like the Kiwi. There’s still got some I need to know more about.
I really want to live there no matter with my beloved friends or just by myself. The reason why I love to live and work there is that the stunning natural place and the modernity just coexist so well, which really makes me feel that this is life! Also, I love the pace of life there, not too slow nor too fast.
Describe an item you bought but do not often use
Describe an item you bought but do not often use
You should say:
When you bought it
Where you bought it
Why you bought it
And explain why you didn’t often use it
An item that I bought but do not often use was a set of Beats headphones, which I got from an APPLE store in Beijing Sanlitun.
I remember it was on a weekend before I started my new semester that I bought this headphone. It was on sale for students at that time in the store. So, I bought it along with my new laptop, which was a 13-inch MacBook Pro 2018 model.
When I got to the Apple store, the salesperson was so welcoming and was always ready to answer any questions I had in terms of the technology stuff. Well, I regarded myself as tech savvy, but honestly, I still got some problems in choosing different types. So, that guy literally solved all the problems I had met using these gadgets.
Well, honestly, the reason why I bout this set of headphones is that I loved its design, which was cool but low key, I mean the black model. I knew its sound quality wouldn’t be that much classic, but in terms of the discount, I thought it was worth it.
However, just several weeks after I bought it, I felt like I kind of overestimated its quality and the design. You know, the longer I put them on my head, the more pain I could get. It’s too tight, they should have made it bigger! That’s the reason why I didn’t use it often now.
Describe a person who does something to help protect the environment
Describe a person who does something to help protect the environment
You should say:
Who this person is
What he or she does to protect the environment
How difficult it is to do that
And explain how you feel about the things this person does
The environmentally friendly person I am going to tell you is my grandma. She is already 83 years old, but quite healthy. Every morning after breakfast, she takes a walk in a park nearby, which usually lasts an hour. In the evening, she would sit in front of the house and chat with other old ladies.
The way she protects the environment is quite simple. Do not copy or repost it. She insists to bring her own cloth bag to the supermarket to buy some vegetables on her way home from the walk so that she will not need the plastic bags. A year ago, she did not do that. She loved to use the plastic bags because they are light and convenient. But when I told her that plastic bags are almost impossible to dissolve in nature and can kill animals when they accidentally eat them, her behavior changed. Now, wherever she goes, she will take her cloth bag.
Giving up plastic bags and using a cloth bag instead is quite an easy way to protect the environment, but insistence is another thing. Even though we know how harmful plastic is to the environment, sometimes we would still use it because of its convenience.
That is why I admire my grandma. She never forges to bring her cloth bag. If everybody behaves like her, I believe our environmental issue will be significantly alleviated in a short time.
Describe a café you like to visit/you have been to
The inner design of this cafe is based on the wild animals like giraffe, tiger and something you’ve never met before.
Describe a plan/something you’ve wanted to do for a long time, but haven’t done yet
What it is
Why you would like to do it
How easy or difficult it is to do it
And explain why you haven’t done it yet
Describe an important letter you received
Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something that he/she didn’t want to do 鼓励别人做不愿做的事
If you encourage someone, you give them confidence, for example by letting them know that what they are doing is good and telling them that they should continue to do it.
Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something that he/she didn’t want to do
You should say:
Who he or she is
What you encouraged him/her to do
How he/she reacted
And explain why you encouraged him/her to do it
I’d like to share an experience with you that happened several years ago. This person who I encouraged to do something was Wang Xia, who was my classmate and best friend in senior high school.
I remember it was after we graduated from high school in the summer that I encouraged him to travel abroad with me. And, the destination was Thailand, which was actually not that far compared to western countries such as Australia and the UK but was the first foreign country we were about to travel to in our life.
At the very beginning, he was all at sea with my invitation as he never thought of traveling abroad. He seemed kind of unwilling to go with me as a riot just happen a year ago in Bangkok, which is the country’s capital. To make him believe that the trip was worthwhile, I listed some good reasons such as the lowest hotel and flight price during that time, and a pretty stable political situation since the riot came to an end. Apart from that, I tried to convince him that it was indeed the best time to visit there as we wouldn’t have much time taking an international adventure in our busy college life. He ended up mustering up the courage and accepting my invitation, which made me feel quite excited.
Well, the main reason why I encouraged him to do it was that traveling to Thailand was really cost-effective, which was later approved to be true. You know, we were students and didn’t have much budget. Another reason was that going to Thailand would definitely let us learn a lot about perspectives like the local culture, language, and history, etc. So, why not?
Describe a subject of science that you learned in secondary / high school
Describe a subject of science that you learned in secondary / high school
You should say:
What it was 它是什么
What you learned
What do you think of the teacher
And explain how you felt about it 你觉得这个科目如何
One of the scientific subjects that I learned in high school is physics. It is the natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion and behavior through space and time, along with related concepts such as energy and force. It is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, whose main goal is to understand how the universe behaves.
Of course, what I have learned was not that challenging. It was more about introduction to and simple application of these basic physical concepts, which were mainly confined in classical physics, such as three laws of thermodynamics, Newton’s laws of motion, optics and electromagnetics. But we also touch the area of quantum mechanics.
My physics teacher was a middle-aged man who was medium-sized and a little bald. Instead of directly telling us the knowledge and answers, he preferred eliciting us. Do not copy or repost it. First, he would let us do a few experiments and carefully observe their phenomena. Then he would ask questions like what they had in common or what the difference was, trying to make us think for ourselves and understand what the course would be about. In this way, we had a better understanding of the knowledge.
I love physics. In fact, it was my best subject back in high school. I feel I have a better understanding of how the world works through it.
Describe a park/garden you like visiting
Describe a park/garden you like visiting
You should say:
Where the park is
When you visit it
What the park is like
And explain why you like visiting it
A garden I like visiting is the Christchurch Botanic Gardens which is located in Christchurch, New Zealand.
I visited this garden while I was taking a summer vacation in 2014 with my friends. This garden is probably the most beautiful and pure garden that I have ever seen in my entire life. It is large but very well-structured.
Once you are in this garden, you feel like you are in a Jurassic Park. I mean, the plants there are quite uncommon compared to the ones that I have seen back in China. The trees are tall and look like they are those in the Cretaceous period. The only pity is that there are no dinosaurs in the garden. You know it would be a perfect scene of that period if they had some, but maybe I’m just demanding too much.
I remember there was a small stream that gave me the deepest impression. The water was crystal clear and tasted sweet. It’s way better than the bottled Nongfu Spring water in my home country.
The reason why I love visiting there is that it brings inner peace to me. You know the serene and unpolluted natural environment there enable me to calm down and contemplate for the meaning of life. I’m truly grateful that I have got his chance to visit this garden, and I definitely wish I could go there again.
Describe a new/exciting activity that you want to try for the first time想尝试的新鲜事
What it is
Where you can do it
How you do it
And explain why you feel excited
Describe a bicycle/motorbike/car trip that is interesting。
This is probably one of the most unforgettable traveling experience in my life.
Describe an important river/areas of water in your country
Describe an important river/area of water in your country
You should say:
How long the river is
Where it is
What it looks like
Why it is important
Speaking of an important river, I would like to talk about the Yangtse river, which is the biggest and longest river in China. It’s about 6,300 kilometers long.
The Yangtse River lies in the south of China. It stretches to 11 provinces in China and drains nearly one-fifth of the land areas of China.
If you see it on the map, you will find it looks not that special, maybe just like any other rivers, for example, the Nile or something. Do not copy or repost it. However, when you take a closer look at it, you won’t feel like it’s something that other rivers can copy.
I remember when I was in the grade 9, I took a boat trip with my parents to Sanxia, where we saw the most stunning view of the Yangtse River along with the tall green mountains like Shennv Feng.
It is indeed very important, not only for the local residents who need the water for life, but it is also crucial for the entire nation, because there’s the Three Gorges Dam lies on it, and it ha’s been generating a lot of electrical power, which is used for all the families and industries in China.
Describe a TV program
You should say:
What the TV program is
How you know it
What it is like
Why you like it
The program I am going to talk about is a TV series called criminal minds. The first time I saw it can be traced back to 6 years ago when I was browsing Douban, a TV series ranking website. This drama was at the top of the list, getting a score of 9.5 out of 10. I thought there must be something good in it. So I downloaded it and began watching.
At the first sight, I was absorbed. Unlike other crime series, which focus on the crime itself and the process to discover evidence, this one concentrates on the psychological journey of the suspect. What prompts him to generate the ideas to break the law and what triggers him to put these terrible ideas into practice. Do not copy or repost it. Every episode begins with a murder. Then the agents from FBI would go to the crime scene and collect clues, based on which, they would deduct the psychological feature and behavior pattern of the criminal. Then they narrow the scope of the search and catch the bad guy.
This series probes into the dark side and contradiction of human nature, revealing that a criminal is not born to be a criminal, but cultivated to be one by the environment. That is why I like it.
Describe a toy you liked in your childhood
Describe a toy you had in your childhood
You should say:
When you had the toy
Who gave you the toy
What it was like
How you felt about the toy
The toy I am going to tell you is the model of a transformer. When I was 5 or 6 years old, the cartoon ‘transformers’ was very popular in China. Every night at 6.30, I would sit in front of the television and wait for the good Optimus Prime and his fellow warriors fighting against the evil Megatron. My classmates and I even played their roles in the day and fought against each other at school.
One day when my father and I were shopping in a mall, I notice the model of Optimus Prime on the counter of a shop. It may be a little crude in today’s perspective, but then it was the best thing I had ever seen. Do not copy or repost it. I could not move my eyes. After begging my father for almost half an hour, he finally agreed to buy it.
It was the best toy in my childhood, with not only flexible joints but also two forms. It could change from human to a truck, a true transformer. Every day, I held it in my hand, imagining that I was fighting against Megatron and saving the earth. I shouted their slogan or made the sound of shooting and explosion. I was so absorbed in my own world that sometimes I even forgot to eat. Oh, I miss it.
Part 3
How do advertisements influence children?
Should advertising aiming at kids be prohibited?
Do you think parents should buy more toys for their kids or spend more time with them?
Describe a time when someone visited your home
Describe a time when someone visited your home
You should say:
Who he or she was
When it happened
What you did
How you felt about the visit
Speaking of someone who visited my home, I really want to say a time happened before the Lunar New Year when I was in the third year of my high school.
My aunt got married to my French uncle, and they dropped by when they were about to head off to Paris after their Christmas holiday. My aunt is my mother’s youngest sister. Because of the busy life, it’s been quite a while since they met with our family last time.
Actually, their visit wasn’t so impressive, just as an ordinary one like others’. But, what made their visit slightly unusual was that this time my aunt brought her newly married foreign husband her husband’s little brother to our family. You know, it’s not quite common to see some exotic faces in my hometown. So, when other relatives who visited our home at the same time, there’s something interesting happened.
I clearly remember those smiles with awkwardness on everyone’s face when they were sitting on the sofa. Becuase, others don’t speak French, and every time when my aunt wasn’t on the spot, a silence would happen now and then. Do not copy or repost it. But, anyhow, my relatives were all very outgoing and funny, they managed to communicate with my two uncles with some simple gestures and facial expressions.
You know what happened after the Spring Festival? Both my uncles, my parents and my relatives have been trying to learn their own new language during their spare time. I guess our family got better studying atmosphere because of this interesting visit.
Describe a time that you were late
Describe a time that your were late
You should say:
When it was
What time you arrived
Why you were late
How you felt
The experience I am going to talk about is that I was late for the final exam of mathematics, an important course in my senior year, whose result would decide whether I got the scholarship. The exam began at 8.30 in the morning and would last for 2 hours. But when I opened my eyes in the bed, it was already 9 o’clock. With no time to wash my face and brush my teeth, I put on my clothes, rushed to the examination room and arrived at a quarter past nine.
So I only got 75 minutes left to finish the test, which was almost an impossible task. I could see the scholarship had walked away. During the test, I could not stop blaming myself. Why did I stay up so late the night before and why did not I set several alarms in case I missed one? I almost cried out.
Fortunately, my teacher sympathized with my feelings and gave me another half an hour to complete the test. I was so grateful to him and promised I would never make a mistake like this again.
Describe an important event that you celebrated
Describe an important event that you celebrated
You should say:
What it was
Where it happened
Why it was important
How people felt about it
The important event I am going to talk about is that Lina, a Chinese female tennis player, won the championship of French Open in 2011.
French Open is one of the four major tennis tournaments around the world. It is held in the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, from the late May to the early June, lasting over two weeks. It is also the only world-class tournament held on the clay court and is widely considered to be the most physically demanding match. After beating one after one opponent, Lina won the qualification for the final and was faced with Schiavone, an Italian eminent tennis player. It was a tough match. Both plays spare no efforts. In the end, Lina defeated her rival and become the champion.
It was the first time that a Chinese player won a world-class match, setting a record. Before then, tennis was of minority interest. There were few tennis courts and sportscasts. But after then, almost every university constructed its own courts and set up tennis courses. Many parents sent their children to learn how to play. And CCTV, the Chinese national TV station, wouldn’t miss a single tennis match.
Ordinary people were so excited about Lina winning the championship that some of them even set off fireworks to celebrate.
Describe a time that you saved money for something
Describe a time that you saved money for something
You should say:
When it was
Why you saved money
How much you saved
How you felt about it
The experience I am going to talk about is that I saved money for a Walkman, which is a small equipment to play music, a little bigger than the cellphone. With it, you can listen to music anywhere at any time.
That is about 11 years ago, when I was in the secondary school. At that time, cellphone was still a luxury that few people could afford, and Mp3 player was very rare. If people wanted to listen to music, they were likely to turn to the big tape recorder. If you had a Walkman then, you were standing at the edge of fashion and would attract huge attention in the campus.
I always wanted one. But since it was not relevant to my study, it was almost impossible to get sponsorship from my parents. So I decided to save money by myself. Do not copy or repost it. I cut off all the non-essential spending, stopped attending any social activity that might cost money, and reduce my food budget from 20 RMB a day to 15 RMB.
3 months later, I saved about 600 yen, just enough to buy the Walkman. That weekend, I went to the shopping mall and got what I wanted. The moment I opened the box, I felt a great sense of satisfaction. Everything I had suffered finally paid off.
Describe a situation when you had to be polite
Describe a situation when you had to be polite
You should say:
What situation it was
Who were there
Why you had to be polite
Explain how you showed politeness
A situation when I had to be polite was to show politeness to my senior family members before getting the Red-Pocket, which we call the lucky money during the Spring Festival.
I remember clearly it was the first year of my primary school that my parents taught me the tradition of receiving the lucky money. My parents said that I had to kowtow to my grandparents and show my blessing to them before they give me the Red-Pocket.
At first, like any peer of mine, I was extremely shy and embarrassed to say something that I would imagine I shouldn’t say so in my life. Do not copy or repost it. You know something awkward to me happened, I was so nervous that I could only say my incomplete sentence of blessing and kowtowed to them at the moment I came near to them.
Obviously, my grandparents were quite experienced for this, they immediately held my elbows to support me, and then took out her thick red-pocket, which I had no idea at that time what was inside.
Difficult the first time, easy the second. I became an expert of this, and really enjoyed the harvest of every Spring Festival until I graduate from the college. I should have gone back to my childhood to cherish that innocent moment.
