Describe an interesting conversation you had with someone you didn’t know与陌生人的有趣谈话
When and where you had the conversation
Who you talked to
What you talked about
Describe an interesting conversation you had with a stranger
You should say:
Who the person is 这个人是谁
What you talked about 讨论了什么
What kind of person he/she is 他/她是什么样的人
And explain why the conversation was interesting
The interesting conversation I am going to tell you happened in an Italian bank. I was travelling there and since I was running out of money, I went to the bank to cash some traveler’s checks. The exchange rate was looking healthy. But when I went to the teller, they told me the computer system was temporarily down, so they could not do any transactions. They said the problem would be fixed in a minute. So I waited.
Then I started talking to another guy in the bank. He was a tourist from China and studied in Britain. He had been here for a week, but he was moving on to Germany tomorrow. Do not copy or repost it. He was an architect and he spent four weeks travelling around Europe. He told me the names of some places where we should eat, great food and not too expensive. He also gave me this map of the bus system. He said he did not need it anymore.
The reason I find this conversation interesting is that I never expected to chat with someone in the bank. But I did and got a lot of useful information and some advice for my coming tour.
Describe an important letter you received
Describe an important letter you received
You should say:
When you received it 你什么时候收到的
Who sent it 谁寄的这封信
What it was about 它的内容是什么
And explain why it was important
The important letter I am going to tell you is an offer from University College of London. About the same time last year, I embarked on the application for universities in the United Kingdom, hoping that I could complete my mater degree there. I submitted all the required materials and began the anxious waiting. Seven months had passed. The application windows of many universities gradually closed and a lot of students around me had received their offers. However, among the three colleges I had applied for, one had declined me, one had put me on the hopeless waiting list, and the last on UCL, where I wanted to go most, still had no news. I began to wonder that maybe I could never go to study in UK.
One day afternoon, I went to play badminton with my roommates. During the break, I complained to him about my application experience. Right at that moment, my friend came over and said there was a letter for me. It turned out to be from the UCL student admission office. Do not copy or repost it. My heart immediately began to bump frantically. I could literally feel it at my throat. I could not help to wondering if it was another rejection. I took a deep breath and opened it. Right at the top, it stated that ‘Dear XXX, congratulations’. I was so excited that I started to whoop in the badminton court even before I finished reading it.
This letter changed my life. I had been planning to work after graduation. But now, I will go the United Kingdom and realize my dream.
Describe an important change in your life 人生中的一次重要改变
You should say:
What the change was
When and where this change happened
What caused this change
And explain how you benefited from this change
Describe an experience you spend your time with a child与孩子共度的一段时间
When you spent time with this child
Who this child was
What you did together
And explain how you felt about it
Describe an enjoyable experience in your childhood
Describe an experience that you taught a friend or a relative
You should say:
Who you taught
When you taught
What you taught
And explain how you felt about the teaching
The experience I am going to tell you is that I taught my mother how to use Wechat to send audio messages. My mother is an old lady marching towards her 60s. She did not attend college but went to work directly after high school, which was quite common in her era. Ever since marriage, her life center has been put at the family and she made sure my father and I eat well and dress well, and we have a nice clean house. Thus she did not have much time to pay attention to the development of technology and often felt puzzled facing all those high-tech devices like smart-phones, laptops and smart televisions.
Last spring festival, my mother asked me whether I knew how to send audio messages through Wechat. Since she was getting older and developing presbyopia, texting became pretty challenging. She figured she might use audio messages instead, but did not know how. Do not copy or repost it. I said of course and patiently showed her how to open the app, how to switch between text and audio, how to record, where she should speak to, and how to send. She was so careful that she even wrote down all these procedures. After several practice, she could do this by herself. I saw a big smile appear on her face.
I was happy too. My mother has been tending me for all her life. Now it is my turn to take care of her.
Describe an experience of good service in a shop or restaurant
Describe an experience of good service in a shop or restaurant
You should say:
Let’s relax.
When it happened
我记得第1次去那应该是在14年的一个圣诞节前夕(a week before the Christmas)
Where it happened
How you felt about it
And explain why you think it was good service
Describe an exciting book you have read
You should say:
When you read it
What type/kind of book it is
What it is about
Why you read it/why it is exciting
An exciting book that I have read is the Lonely Planet, which is a very popular and informative traveling book in the world.
The first time I read it was during the last Christmas. I saw an advertisement about this book series, and immediately bought it on JD Read, which is an online book selling platform. It was a must for me during that time because I wanted it to be my helpful tour guide when I was traveling around New Zealand.
I thought this book was quite worthwhile reading, because there’s not only a lot of vivid pictures and maps which indicated some cultural aspects about New Zealand, but also provided up some up-to-date contact information of so many awesome hotels, cafeterias and museums, etc.
What made me feel very excited about this book was that it enabled me to find a very wonderful and quiet resort that was not known to most travels in New Zealand. Do not copy or repost it. This resort had first class service, and provided us tasty breakfast without charge. This place also allowed me to make some Maori friends who taught me a lot useful Maori expressions. I spend my most memorable two weeks there during the whole last year.
Describe an enjoyable experience in your childhood
Describe a childhood friend of yours
You should say?
When did you have this experience?
Where did you have this experience?
Who were with you?
What did you do?
And explain how you felt about it 你感受如何?
The enjoyable experience I am going to tell you happened when I was 12 years old. Then a new amusement park opened at Ji’nan, the capital of my province. Ever since I saw its advertisement on the television, I had been harassing my father to go there. Eventually he yielded and promised to take me there on weekends.
We set out very early in the morning on Sunday that week, since the park was a little far away, which took an hour’s drive. At the arrival, I was astonished by the variety of entertainment facilities. Some of them were beyond my imagination and had not even appeared on the television. We tried Pirate Ship Ride, which swung back and forth, subjecting me to various levels of angular momentum, bumper cars, which we drove to crash each other, and the Mega Drop, which fell from a height of 15 meters. But my favorite was the roller coaster. Do not copy or repost it. It was designed to follow an elevated railroad track with tight turns, steep slopes, and inversions. There was an almost vertical slope and the coaster would stop for a moment at the edge of it in order to elicit your fear. My heart was literally pumping at my throat.
I really enjoy this piece of memory. It is as vivid as that just happened yesterday.
Describe an English lesson you had
Describe an English lesson you had
You should say:
What the lesson was about 课程是关于什么的
Where you studied it 你在哪学的
When you studied it 什么时候学的
And explain why you studied this lesson
Well, an English lesson I had that was deeply stuck in my memory was actually happened nearly a decade ago.
The lesson itself was by no doubt worthwhile taking. However, I was not that comfortable during, as I remember, the first week right after the National Day. I was having a holiday syndrome, you know, always recalling the wonderful precious moments when I was with my comrades on the battle of the League of Legends, which was quite popular among youngsters like us. Plus, I got a cold and was even affected by the coronary herpes, which made me feel quite exhausted.
I clearly remember that it was a lesson about the American foods given by my favorite teacher – Jenny. You know the itches under the skin right on my biceps really tortured me like I was a poor little man swimming in the river near the water dam that was not gonna give you a single chance to get back to the land. Do not copy or repost it. You can’t imagine how hard it was for me to stick to the end of the lesson.
It was Tony who was my classmate that helped me out when he noticed my discomfort and sent me to the hospital, and I ended up getting better after that life-long English lesson.
Describe an advertisement you remember well
Describe an advertisement you remember well
You should say:
Where you saw it
What it was about
What it was like
Why you remember it well
Well, an advertisement I remember well was the one selling beverages. It’s a brand called Hainan Coconut Tree Milk.
I remember it was during the Spring Festival Gala of 2008 that I got to know this ad for the first time. You know what, the time during the Gala on TV was very precious, and usually companies from all industries wanted to bid for a chance to show their product. I saw this coconut milk commercial right before the gala began, so you know how dear that ad fees would be.
Honestly, the art design of the ad was inferior to their counterparts, but it stood out from them all by its impressive way of presentation. It just showed up the Chinese words of Hainan Coconut Tree Milk with a huge LOGO. I couldn’t see any animation, but can only hear a broadcaster announcing the brand name. The voice announcement was actually three seconds in length but was played for three times in one go, which lasted for nine seconds in total.
At that time, I thought it’s the worst ad design I had seen in my life. However, it really worked pretty well as when I woke up in the morning in the following days, the repeated magical voice was still lingering in my head.
The reason why I remember it so well is that this repetitive vocal branding just implanted into my head, making it difficult to forget.
Describe an activity near the water
Describe a famous athlete you know 。
You should say:
What it is 活动是什么?
When you did this activity?
How you did it?
And explain how did you feel about it?
The activity I am going to tell you is a whale-watch experience. Last year, my corporation organized a trip to Japan. According to to the plan, we could either go for the whale watch or choose diving. I opted for the former one.
The travel agent picked me up at the hotel at 8 o’clock in the morning and transported me to the dock. After signing up some agreement, I boarded on a boat and set out to search for the whales. Soon we reached the area where they conducted reproduction and there were whales appearing on the surface of the sea from time to time. Do not copy or repost it. The travel agent even named them, Echo, Kiwi, Samson, and Moon dancer. Samson and Moon dancer often emerged together, but it was Kiwi who was the real character. She loved to come close to the boat. They all had their own personalities. Moon dancer was very elegant and curved out and into the water very smoothly while Samson had a lot of energy. He was always leaping out of the water with great vigor. Kiwi made a great deal of noise, so we could often pick her out straight away. Moon dancer was also easy to find because she had a particularly large fin on her back.
Though I was a little seasick because of the waves, I was so excited to have this experience. It was the first time I saw whales in real life and they were even bigger and more beautiful than I had expected.
Describe an achievement that you are proud of 引以为豪的成就
You should say:
What it was 它是什么
How you did it 你怎么达成的
How difficult it was 它有多困难
And explain why you are proud of it 解释你为什么为之自豪
The achievement I am going to tell you is that I finally passed my advanced math examination. Since I was a little kid, math had been my nightmare. It was not because I was lazy. Instead I worked really hard. I took down every word the teacher said and made the best notes among my classmates. After class, I spent hours on my homework. Compared to others, I could fairly say I was diligent.
But it seemed that I didn’t possess the talent that math required. Sometimes during the class, I would wonder if the teacher was using the same language I used. Otherwise, why couldn’t I understand a single word he said? Do not copy or repost it. I could recognize every digit and mark he wrote on the blackboard, but they simply didn’t make any sense to me. However, I did not give up. Every time I had something I don’t understand, I would approach my teacher. I could tell he was a bit annoyed, but anyway. I also harassed my classmates, and in exchange, I would buy snacks and drinks for them.
My efforts finally paid off. I got a B plus in the advanced math examination. I knew it wouldn’t even be a satisfactory grade to many others. But I was proud. I managed to complete something that was beyond my capability. That was important.
Describe a traditional product in your country
Describe a traditional product in your country
You should say:
What the product is 该产品是什么
When you tried this product for the first time 你什么时候尝试的第1次
What it is made of 它由什么制成
And explain why you like this product
The traditional product I am going to tell you is Chinese tea. According to popular legend, tea was discovered by Chinese Emperor Shen Nong about 5000 year ago when a leaf from a nearby shrub fell into water the emperor was boiling. He believed that tea can clean our stomach and serve as antidote. Tea is deeply woven into the history and culture of China. The beverage is considered one of the seven necessities of Chinese life, along with firewood, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce and vinegar. And it can be classified into five distinctive categories based on the different fry methods.
Ever since I remember, tea has been a part of my life. When you make a Chinese tea, just put it into boiling water. Never add milk and sugar. Wait for a few minutes so that the color, flavor and goodness to come out. Do not copy or repost it. Then you take a deep breath to appreciate its fragrancy and begin to sip. Generally speaking, it would taste a little bitter at first, which I suspect may be the reason that Chinese tea is not popular abroad. But after several seconds, you can feel sweetness through your tongue.
I love tea, not only because it is beneficial for my health, but because it is also a good way to socialize. During my spare time, I often invite two or three friends under the excuse of tasting some special tea and have a wonderful time.
Describe a time you were not allowed to use your mobile phone
When and where it was
Why you were not allowed to use your phone
And explain how you felt about not being able to use your phone
Describe a time you felt happy that you used your cellphone,不容忽视。
Describe a couple you know who have a happy marriage
Describe a time you went to a crowded place/Describe a crowded place you went to 拥挤的地方
Describe a time you went to a crowded place
Describe a crowded place you went to
You should say:
When you went there
Where the place was
What you did there 吗
And explain why you went there / how you felt the crowded place
The crowded place I am going to tell you about is the train during the Spring Festival. Spring Festival is the most important festival in Chinese culture. No matter where he is and how old he is, every Chinese would return to his hometown and celebrate the festival with his parents, relatives, and friends. I would do the same thing as well. Since people choose almost the same time to set off, the transport system is under great pressure.
I still remember how crowded the train was when I returned home in my junior year at university. The moment I stepped into the coach, I was astonished. There were people everywhere, be it on the seats, in the aisles, in the junctions between cars and even under the seats. Some people sat on the stool they bought, while some just stood, with their shoulders against shoulders and backs against backs. Do not copy or repost it. Luckily, as a student, I enjoyed the privilege to buy tickets in advance, so I had got a seat. But the journey from the door to the seat was quite challenging. I had to be very careful so that I would not put my foot on the limbs of somebody else. Once I sat down, movement was a luxury. I had to reduce the amount of water I drank as much as possible, for going to the toilet was almost impossible.
This was a really tough journey. Fortunately, China launched high-speed trains the year after, which greatly alleviate the crowd of the train.
Describe a time you need to arrive early
You should say:
When it was 什么时候
What time you arrived
Why you need to arrive early
And explain how you felt
The experience I am going to tell you is that I arrived early for an interview. That was the summer vacation during my senior year in university. I tried to apply for an internship at Baidu, the company I hoped I could work in after graduation. I polished my resume, submitted it through the website, and got the reply for human resource department. The only obstacle between me and the internship was an interview.
It was set in an office building I had never been to. The map said it would take approximately an hour and a half to arrive. There was no available subway route and a taxi would be beyond my budget. Do not copy or repost it. Considering the traffic condition in Beijing and the possibility of getting lost, I decided to set off 3 hours earlier. Surprisingly, the journey was quite smooth, and I only spent one hour on the road. So there were still 2 hours left.
Instead of being frustrated, I used the precious time to recollect the details about this company and practice the answers to the possible questions. The interview went well and I got the internship as I wished.
Describe a time you felt happy that you used your cellphone
You should say:
When it happened
Where it happened
Who you were with
And explain why you felt happy by using your cellphone
The experience I am going to tell you happened last year, when I was applying for universities in the United Kingdom, hoping that I could complete my mater degree there. It had come to April. Many colleges’ applications had met their deadline and many of my classmates had received their offers. However, among the 3 universities that I applied for, one had declined me, one had put me on the waiting list, and the last one, UCL, where I wanted to go most, still had no news. I began to wonder maybe I could never go to study in the UK.
One day, I went shower with my best friend. I was living in school, and we did not have bathroom in the dormitory. If we wanted to go shower, we would have to walk for 20 minutes before we reached the public shower room. On the way, I was complaining to my friend about my application, and then my cellphone rang. Do not copy or repost it. It turned out to be the UCL student admission office. He found my qualification was very competent through the personal statement and the references, but could not make decision without a brief telephone interview. He wondered whether it was possible to do it right now. I said of course. Then he asked a few simple questions and hang up.
Two days later, I received an offer from UCL. I was so excited and felt happy to have my cellphone. Otherwise, I might has missed the interview and lost my chance to go to UCL.
Describe a time when you had a special cake特别的蛋糕
What kind of cake it was
Who you had it with
When and where you ate it
And explain why you think it was special
Describe a time that you had a free gift
You should say:
When did you have this gift
Where did you have it 从哪得来的
What was the gift
And explain how did you feel about it 你感觉如何
The free gift I am going to tell you is a portable bicycle which I got at my junior year in University. That was the right beginning of the term. To attract student customers and compete with its rival, the communication operator company, China Unicom, set up an advertisement campaign. It would give you various gifts including key rings, flash disks, and fluffy toys and so on, according to the amount of money you top-up at the site. Do not copy or repost it. If you top-up 500 yuan at a time, you would get a bicycle, whose size was only the half of what we usually saw on the street. The height of seat and handlebar were adjustable and the whole body was painted light green with the logo of China Unicom on it.
Then I happened to need a bike to reduce my commuting time. My campus was huge and it took me 20 minutes from dormitory to classroom. It is common in western university as students live outside of the campus, but in China, where we have dormitory right in the campus, that was a long time.
So I charged 500 yuan and got this bike. To be honest, it was not very nice, as you can imagine with the color and logo. But it did make my life much more convenient. What was more important was that it was free. So generally speaking, I was quite satisfied.
