Describe an outdoor sport you played for the first time 第1次做的户外运动
Describe an outdoor sport you played for the first time
You should say:
What it is
When you first played
Who you played it with
How you learned to play the sport
And how you felt about the sport

One of the outdoor sports I played for the first time was snorkeling when I was abroad for traveling.
I remember it was the time after graduation that I went to Phuket Island in Thailand with my classmates for vocation. I got to know about this sport from our tour guide who led us to a small tourist island for sightseeing.
Snorkeling is kind of a practice for real swimming in the sea. In order to make sure that everyone one of us in the touring group could swim in the sea and that nobody would accidentally get injured because of lack of practice, our tour guide Jack gave us a roughly two-hour training in a huge swimming pool of a villa on that small island.
To snorkel, you have to be equipped with a kind of diving mask with a long tube that enables you to breathe the air in the water. Honestly, I was a little scared because I seldom swam before, not to mention diving in the water just with a help of a tube. You know, Jack was extremely nice. He helped me conquer the fear by teaching me how to snorkel step by step. I saw his movement was so natural, and mine was like a zombie. Then, I followed his advice to practice every single step time and time again. It took me almost the entire two hours to master it. I felt it’s really worthwhile and I really appreciate his guidance.
Well, I think snorkeling was not that really hard after I learned how to let go in terms of our inner fear. From that on, snorkeling has been one of my favorite outdoor sport in my life.
Describe an old person you know and respect
Describe an old person you know and respect
You should say
Who he or she is
How you know this person
What he or she is like
And explain why you respect him or her
The person I am going to tell you is my father’s best friend. They were born in the same village and have known each other for more than 30 years. He is a professor at the mathematical department of XXX university. He has published many papers and several books, which has earned him some fame in the academic circle.
I do not remember when I first met him. It seems that ever since I had memory, he has been a regular visitor to my home. Almost every Saturday, he and my father would drink some wine, chat for a while, and play chess together. So I have always been very familiar with him.
Back in primary school, my performance in math was disappointing, my father asked him to do some tutoring work. That is when he became my childhood model. His explanation was much clearer than that of my teacher at school. He taught me how to relate the cold figures and equations to the colorful real world, which turned math into an interesting subject. Thanks to him, my math grade had improved a lot.
When I grew up, I wanted to become a person just like him, who is intelligent and patient. I would use my knowledge and power to help others solve their study problems and find the pleasure of study.
Describe an old person who is interesting/an interesting old person you met有趣的老人
Describe an interesting person you would like to meet;两个基本上只差在年龄的限制上。
Describe an old person who is interesting
You should say:
Who this person was;
How you met this person;
What you did or talked about;
And explain why you think this person was interesting.
An interesting old person I met is an Italian cruise ship pianist named Will, who was probably in his 50s.
It was about a year and a half ago, my friends and I were on the National Day Holiday, and we took an Italian cruise ship to Kagoshima in Japan. That’s was the first time in my life to travel by sea, and it was indeed a totally different experience.
I met this pianist at a corner of a café lounge on this cruise ship. His music was so soothing to us when we were relaxing on the couch enjoying the endless blue sea outside the window. He came at 2 pm every day on shift, and I had become his loyal listener since the first day on board. He sometimes also sang and played some Chinese classic songs from singers like Zhou Huajian, who was my parents’ age, but is still very popular nowadays in China.
He was so nice to his listeners and I even had some chitchat with him after his performance. What made me so interesting about him was that he sang perfectly in Chinese, which was amazing. Do not copy or repost it. At least most of the Chinese senior singers I met at his age wouldn’t be able to sing in English well. You know, he told me he was quite into Chinese culture and had been there for many times.
Well, I think the craziest and coolest thing he did I think was that he chose to live his life on this cruise, and it’s been almost 3 years! That reminds me of a movie called The Legend of 1900, in which there’s a pianist who also had his piano career on the sea. I think Will is one of a few who I’ve met that have lived life in the most interesting way.
Describe an old friend that you got in contact again
Describe an old friend that you got in contact again
You should say
Who he or she is
What he or she is like
How you got in contact
And explain how you felt about it
Well, an old friend that I got in contact again is Gao Shuang, who was my junior high school classmate.
I got in touch with him last month with the help of a mutual friend who is currently working as an intern in the same company as me. So, I was given the Wechat ID of Gao, and we got a chance to meet up one Saturday morning. You know, it’s been around 7 years since I saw him last time. I just couldn’t believe I was able to retrieve his information from others.
Well, the moment I saw him, I was kind of shocked by his appearance. He used to be a person having a funky hairstyle and some fashionable clothes. You know, he had always been trendy in our class. But, now it seems that he’s become more mature and low-key to some extent. I could see the sudden change in his dressing habit compared to the past. And, the way he talked was no longer that fast. Instead, it became slow, clear, and way more logical. I guess that’s the improvement he gained from all the past years.
I actually felt great to meet him again after so long. Life is just like a surprise, I never thought I could see him again. You know, being able to chat with an old classmate in another city is definitely a joyful thing.
Describe an occasion you wore the best clothes
Describe an occasion you wore the best clothes
You should say:
When it was
What you wore
What it looked like
And explain why you wore it
A time I had the best clothes actually happened in a provincial competition.
I remember it was during the second year of my junior high school that I participated in a speech competition at school for the first time. I was lucky enough to be selected into the final round, which would be held later at the provincial level.
Well, there’s a dress code required by the committee of that competition, and the thing was that I didn’t even have a suit, which made me feel quite edgy. My brother-in-law, who was then an accountant in a company, have an additional one which was his wedding suit. He lent it to me when he knew that I was about to attend such a formal event.
Well, the suit was in black, embellished with some white flowery lines on the collar, which was a bit of overwhelming to me though because I had never ever looked that formal. But, it totally saved my life and helped me gain tremendous recognition from both the audiences and the panel of judges.
The reason why I wore it was that there’s a dress code as I mentioned before and that I had no other choice but had my brother’s suit on. But, it’s definitely the best clothes I wore.
Describe an occasion when you were not allowed to use your mobile phone
Describe an occasion when you were not allowed to use your mobile phone
You should say
When it was
Where it was
Why you were not allowed to use your mobile phone
And how you felt about it
The experience I am going to tell you happened three years ago. Back then, I just finished my college entrance exam and received the offer of my dream school. To reward myself and compensate for the lack of entertainment in the past year, I managed to persuade my parents to allow me to have a vacation in Thailand. After a little preparation, I embarked on the plane.
The moment I settled down on my seat, I found a plastic notice board stuffed in the bag in front of me. It said the mobile phone was strictly prohibited during the flight. This message was repeated in the safety introduction, and before the plane took off, the attendants kept wandering around to see if there was any passenger who was still playing with their smartphones.
According to their explanation, prohibiting mobile phones is out of safety concerns. The signal they transmitted could interfere with the communication between the pilot and the tower, which played a significant role in guiding the plane to take off and land.
Without my mobile phone, it was the most boring 5 hours I have ever spent. There was no entertainment service available and I forgot to bring a book to kill time. At first, I comforted myself with the sceneries out of the window. But with the altitude increased, the views were soon blocked by thick clouds. I tried to sleep, but it was just 10 o’clock in the morning and I was not sleepy at all. Then I realized what a great invention the mobile phone is.
Describe an occasion when you wasted your time 浪费时间的场合
Describe an occasion when you wasted your time
You should say
Where you were
When it was
What you did
And explain why you think it was a waste of time
The experience I am going to tell you happened during the last summer holiday. I had stayed at home for almost a month and was already fed up with various video games and TV programs. All of my friends seemed busy with their own stuff, so I was bored to death. One day, my best friend called me and asked if I wanted to have a one-day tour with him to Xi’an, a historical city, which used to be the capital of 13 dynasties. I said yes immediately.
I looked up the timetable of the coach on the internet and it seemed that there was only one departure a day at 7 am, which means I had to get up at around 6 o’clock to catch it. For somebody like the elderly, it might be easy. But as a person who had always slept late in the last month, it was far too early.
Anyway, I managed to get to the coach stop just on time. But when I arrived, there were only my friend and me, nobody else. The day was just dawning and I could only see a cleaner sweeping on the street. We waited for about half an hour before another body showed up. He said the departure time of the coach had been changed to 8.00 recently because too many people complained about its irrationality. They must have not updated the information online in time.
I was a little angry. I set five alarms on my cellphone the night before so that I would not oversleep and miss the coach. But now you were telling me the time had been postponed. Why could not they change their online timetable simultaneously to avoid such inconvenience? Now, I had wasted a whole hour waiting at the bus stop, which could have been used to have a sound sleep.
Describe an occasion when you lost your way 迷路的经历
Describe an occasion when you lost your way
You should say
Where you were
What happened
How you felt
And explain how you found your way
The experience I am going to tell you happened three months ago. Back then, I just survived the intensive revision plan and finished all my final exams, which meant I could finally take a breath and enjoy my holiday. So I decided to travel to Luoyang, a nearby city, well-known for the peony and its long history, to relax.
As it is not far away from home, I chose to drive myself to get there. And my father, who had been there several times, told me “do not follow the navigation on your cellphone. I know a shortcut which would save a lot of time”. So I followed his instruction and ignored the constant hints from the electronic map.
After half an hour’s drive, I found the information he gave was wrong. There was supposed to be a small road stretching out when I turned off from the main road, however, there was nothing but a concrete wall in front of me when I did so. Now, I was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a large area of crops. Luckily, the navigation service was still online. With its help, I successfully found the way back.
I called my father to ask about the situation. He said it had been a year since he last went there. So there must have been some changes he did not know. After that, whenever people’s suggestion goes against the electronic map, I would always choose to believe the latter one.
Describe an occasion when you lost something and then got it back
Describe an occasion when you lost something and then got it back
You should say:
what you lost
How you lost it
Where you found it
And how you felt about it
The experience I am going to tell you is that I lost my cellphone and got it back a year ago. It was an iPhone X, the latest product of the Apple back then, very expensive. Actually, I had saved money for like 5 months to purchase it.
It was a weekend. After having dinner with my friends, I took a taxi to get back home. When I opened the door, sat on the couch and reached into my pocket on my trousers where I often kept my cellphone, I found it was not there. I hastily rummaged other pockets on my jackets but found nothing. It was gone.
I forced myself to calm down and started to recall what had happened. I clearly remembered that I had taken the cellphone out and sent messages in the taxi. And when I got off, I did not check whether I took it with me. So it must be left on the seat. Unfortunately, I did not have the driver’s name or the plate number.
But I did remember which company it belonged to. I searched for the number of its customer service on the internet and made a call. After asking a lot of questions about the journey and the item, it said my cellphone had been handed in by the driver and I could reclaim it at the office tomorrow. Hearing this information, I was flooded with joy. And I swore I would never lose it again.
Describe an occasion when you got incorrect information
Describe an occasion when you got incorrect information
You should say:
Why you got it
When you got it
How you got it
How you found it was incorrect
And how you felt about it
Well, an occasion when I got incorrect information was during the graduation season of my senior high school. It was a piece of information regarding a detailed analysis of different majors in the university.
That occasion was right after I took the Gaokao, which was the college entrance examination in China. At that time, we were supposed to apply for a specific major we wanted to study before we were officially matriculated into the university.
The only main resource of guidance was a booklet that contained lists of majors from different universities. This booklet was given by our teachers after we took an exam. They let us take it home and have a discussion with our parents for the final decision. I didn’t take issue with the opinions it had because it was printed out by the provincial education authority and was recommended by our school.
I didn’t find anything wrong with it until one day when I flipped it over and saw a page that recommended senior high school graduates to apply for a major of the first-tier university with only third-tier Gaokao scores, which was kind of weird for me as I knew that Gaokao was the fairest exam in China even in the world. How could it be possible to get into this prestigious university without a high score? Then, I realized that it was actually a fake guidance page which was actually an advertisement that was designed in a way quite similar to the previous content page.
Well, I thought this conduct was horrible. You know, it’s highly possible that hundreds of graduates would be misled by this fake page. I wish the authority who is responsible for this booklet could be more strict in selecting the advertisers to be shown on this important booklet.
Describe an occasion when you forgot something important
Describe an occasion when you forgot something important
You should say
When it was
What you forgot
Why you forgot it
And how you felt about it
The experience I am going to tell you is that I forgot the date with my girlfriend on the 14th of February this year. It was the first Valentine’s day since we were together, so my girlfriend attached great importance to it. She started to hint at the symbolic meaning of this festival and how much she had been looking forward to it even three months ahead.
As a model boyfriend, I surely did not want to let her down. Therefore, I reserved a table at one of the fanciest restaurants near my school, and booked a bunch of rose in a flower shop the day before. I also bought a pair of silver earrings, hoping this could give her a surprise. Everything was set. I told her to meet me at the school gate at 6 o’clock sharp.
When I was waiting for the time to come in the dormitory, my roommate invited me to play “Glory of Kings”, a computer game where you picked a hero, teamed up with others and fought against the enemy. I looked at my cellphone. It was just 3 pm. So I said why not. Then the worst thing happened.
I was so immersed in the game that I totally ignored the elapse of time. When I finally remembered the date, it was already a quarter past 7. I rushed to the school gate and my girlfriend was gone. I called her but she had put me in the blacklist and it never got through. I was deeply regretful. How could I make such a thorough preparation but forgot the date eventually?
Describe an occasion when weather prevented your activity
Describe an occasion when weather prevented your activity
You should say
When it was
Why it prevented your activity
What you did
And how you felt about it
The experience I am going to tell you happened last summer when I was going to hike in a small mountain not far from my home. It was a sunny day with a mild temperature, perfect weather conditions for such an activity. After having breakfast, I checked my backpack, made sure I am wearing my most comfortable shoes, and took the bus to the foothill.
However, when I got there, the sun disappeared. The wind had picked up, and angry, dark clouds rolled across the sky. I could smell a storm is coming. It looked like I had to cancel my hiking plan unless I wanted to be trapped in the mountain by the rain and be showered as a drowned rat.
I was quite disappointed. I had planned for this hiking for a long time and bought everything I might need, including 8 different kinds of snacks. But now all the preparation was in vain. When I was just setting my foot on the way back, I found that there was a hot spring resort by the road, which I had never been to before. An idea came to me. As I was already here, why not try that.
It was a wonderful experience. After two hours in the pool, all my tiredness was gone, and I could feel my skin actually became a little smoother. There was even some free fruit on the poolside. You could take as many as you want. Though bathing was not my first choice for that day, it actually turned out pretty good.
Describe an occasion when many people were smiling
Describe an occasion when many people were smiling
You should say
When it happened
Who you were with
What happened
And explain why many people were smiling
The experience I am going to tell you happened during the last summer vacation, when my best friend and I were bored to death at home and decided to have a tour in Xi’an, a historical city, which used to be the capital of 13 dynasties.
In this city, there was a famous street selling various antiques and handicrafts which attracted millions of people every year. As a tourist, I certainly would not miss it. When I was wandering on the street and browsing those exotic items, I noticed something interesting. A stall keeper was playing a popular song with an egg-like strange instrument made of ceramic. It looked pretty cool.
In front of the stall were standing a couple of parents and their child, who seemed to be attracted by the music. The eyes of the child, who was about 6 years old, were fixed on the stall keeper’s mouth and fingers. After observing for a while, he took one of these instruments displayed on the shelf and decided to give it a go by himself. He held it exactly like the keeper, moved his mouth to the top hole, and blew hard, but nothing happened. No sound was made.
He looked confused, but decided not to give up. He blew even harder. I could see his face turn red. Still, nothing happened. His face was full of confusion and disappointment. Many people were standing aside and had watched the whole process. They just could not help smiling. The boy was so cute.
Describe an interesting talk or lecture
Describe an interesting talk or lecture
You should say:
When you heard it
Where you heard it
What it was about
And explain why you think it was interesting
I am going to talk about an interesting lecture that I heard 3 years ago. It is still vivid in my mind. Back then I was eager to improve my English and my teacher recommended a lot of materials and websites, which might be useful. One of them is TED, a website where various people share their experience, research, and knowledge. Its motto is “ideas worth spreading”.
I spent a great deal of time on it. Do not copy or repost it. Every day, I browsed through hundreds of lectures, trying to find something that aroused my interest. Then I found one lecture that ranked first at the list of the most played.
It is about how people’s attention works. Every day, our brain receives enormous information, most of which is useless. So during the process of evolution, our brain has gradually developed a filter mechanism. It rules out a lot of things unconsciously so that we can focus on a specific issue. However, the drawback of this mechanism is that it disables us from doing two things at the same time.
The interesting thing about this lecture is that the lecturer illustrates this by showing how picking pocket works. Through distracting people and making them focus on what he is saying, he takes belongings from them without being noticed. It was amazing.
Describe an interesting person you would like to meet
Describe an interesting person you would like to meet
You should say:
Who this person is
What this person does
Why you think this person is interesting
And what you want to do with this person
The interesting person I am going to tell you is Xiaopeng, Who is a middle-aged man at his 40s. I knew him from a book, called “backpacker for ten years”. This book was the bestseller of 2010, and on the cover, you can see him wearing a bag, standing at the top of a mountain, and looking away.
As the book’s name suggests, he is a professional traveler. Do not copy or repost it. By the publication of the book, he had traveled to over 100 countries and was still on his way. No matter where he goes, he will write a review about the place and post it on his blog. As his influence grows, a lot of governments, city councils, hotels and restaurants invite him to experience their service or beautiful sceneries. They even give him payment to do so.
What makes Xiaopeng interesting is his abundant experience. His destinations are not confined to mature tourist attractions. He had been to African tribes, war zones in the middle-east, and steep mountains that few people have reached. Instead of taking a picture and moving on to the next spot, Xiaopeng usually spends a month learning about local customs and try to get into local communities. During this, he has accumulated a large amount of experience and knowledge.
If I meet him, I want to travel with him, or at least listen to all sorts of stories that he does not write out. I believe it would be a wonderful experience.
Describe an interesting part of your country
Describe an interesting part of your country
You should say:
Where it is
How you got to know about it
What it is famous for
And explain why you think it is interesting
The interesting part I am going to tell you is Chongqing. It is located in the southwest of China and surrounded by mountains. In the past, it is often referred to as the “land of abundance”, since it has fertile soil and the mountains keep it from the damage caused by wars.
I knew this place from my textbooks, but just its name and location. Do not copy or repost it. I did not know what it actually looks like until quite recently because a lot of people take videos of this place and post it on Douyin, a very popular short video application.
The city is famous for two things, its food and landscape. Hotpot is the representative of the city’s food, which is hot and spicy. If you are not familiar with the taste, you may not be able to feel your tongues and lips when you take the first bite. But a huge number of people are crazy about it. Some even fly there to have a dinner. The city’s landscape is also unique. As it is built on the mountains, something interesting happens. Usually, we step out of a building on the ground floor and hit on the road. But here, you can also leave the building on the 8th floor or even 15th floor. there are roads out of these floors.
Its food and landscape make it an interesting place and I believe they are also the reasons why so many people post videos about it.
Describe an interesting conversation you had with someone
Describe an interesting conversation you had with a stranger/someone
You should say:
Who this person is
What the conversation was about
Why you had this conversation
And how you felt about it
The interesting conversation I am going to tell you happened last summer when I was traveling to Inner Mongolia on the train. It was a 12 hours exhausting journey. At first, I played games on my cellphone to kill time but the battery soon ran out. After staring at the monotonous view outside the window for about 2 hours, I finally noticed the man sitting beside me.
He was around 50 years old and part of his hair had turned grey. He was wearing suit pants and a white shirt, just like most senior citizens in China. But what caught my attention was the book he was reading. It was written in Mongolian. So I asked him whether he was an indigen there and then our conversation began.
Learning that I was a tourist who was going to spend my vacation in his hometown, he showed great enthusiasm. He put the book down and started introducing the local customs and tourist attractions. The most interesting part of this conversation is that he said in Inner Mongolia, the host would cut the tail of the roasted sheep and presented it to the most honored guest. The tail, which consisted of a lot of fat, would be regarded as an unhealthy food outside, but it was the most precious gift there, which contradicted my perception.
I really enjoyed this conversation. Thanks to him, I was able to find many cheap but delicious restaurants and avoid making misunderstandings with the locals.
Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it was easy for you to study
Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it was easy for you to study
You should say:
Where it is
When you go there
What you study there
Who you go with
Why you would study in this place
The place that I find easy to study is the library in my university. It is a huge building with 8 floors, which was completed only last year. As it is located right in the center of the campus, no matter where you are, you can get there quite easily.
I go there whenever I do not have a class, usually every evening, but sometimes also in the afternoon. Do not copy or repost it. What I study there depends on the assignments of courses. If I have finished all of them, I will randomly pick a book from the shelf and start reading. There were one or two times that the book was so boring that it put me off.
I usually go to the library by myself, because I believe study is quite a personal thing. I do not like to talk with others or share the feelings after reading a book. Instead, I prefer sitting there and retrospecting the content. But before the math exam, I would go there with my best friend, because I need his help to do the review.
The library is a perfect place for study. Firstly, it is very quiet. People consciously keep their voice down and slow their pace. There is no one to interrupt me. Secondly, it has a unique atmosphere. With thousands of books around, I feel I am already smarter.
Describe an important plant in your country
Describe an important plant in your country
You should say:
What it is
Where you see it
What it looks like
Why it is important
The important plant I am going to tell you is bamboo. It is an evergreen perennial flowering plant and has many sub-species. In the south, it can grow to more than 10 meters and as thick as a small tree. In the north, it is often very slim and its height rarely exceeds three meters.
My grandma used to plant some bamboos in her garden and that is where I first saw them. Do not copy or repost it. They had played an important part in my childhood. I cut off their stems to make bows and arrows, imagining I was an archer shooting enemies in the battleground. I also took off some branches and pretended that I was a swordsman.
As I grow up, I gradually realize its importance in China, which does not come from its rarity, but from what it symbolizes in Chinese culture. It is regarded as a behavior model of the gentleman. As bamboo has features such as uprightness, tenacity, and hollow heart, people endow bamboo with integrity, elegance, and plainness, though it is not physically strong. Countless poems praising bamboo written by ancient Chinese poets are actually metaphorically about people who exhibited these characteristics.
Describe an important journey that was delayed
本次话题卡的重点在于delay(延误)。
Describe an important journey that was delayed
You should say:
When it was
Why it was important
How it was delayed
And how you felt about it
I would like to talk about a journey that was happened in early July years ago, which was the month when we had just finished high school. During that period of time, three of my close classmates decided to have a graduation trip to Phuket Island, which was in the south part of Thailand.
The reason why it was important was that it’s the last gathering we could have before going to university. So, all of us really cherished the time being together in that summer.
We actually made very detailed plans about that journey including booking the air tickets, hotel rooms, selecting the scenic spots and choosing appropriate recreational activities. It seemed that we were fully prepared and all things were within our control. However, while we were about to get to the airport, we heard that there was a riot happening in Bankok. For the sake of safety reasons, we were advised to delay the trip a month later by the travel agency that helped us with part of our journey plans.
When I heard about this news, I didn’t care that much, honestly, because I felt that it has nothing to do with tourists, right? But, once I thought of the other travel companions with me, I shouldn’t turn a blind eye to this issue. I was a bit sad. However, we managed to get there in August, which was a great experience for all of us.
