Describe a time when a family member asked you for help
Describe a time when a family member asked you for help
You should say:
When it was
Who asked you for help
How you helped
And how you felt about it
A time when a family member asked me for help was setting up a laptop for my grandfather.
I couldn’t remember the exact date, but I think it was during the summer two years ago. I got my new laptop from my parents as a graduation gift. And the old one that I had been using for almost three years was set aside. So, my father decided to send it to my grandfather, who could use it for better communication and asked me to help grandpa to set up the laptop for his use.
Well, usually setting up a laptop was no big deal. But, when it comes to customizing it for an older person, I should do a bit of research as opposed to just downloading the most common software. I knew that my grandpa had suffered from presbyopia, so I did a lot of personal settings like making the font size bigger than the normal one. Also, I deleted a lot of software that seemed to be useless for him, and added some assistive functions to make the operation easier.
Well, I definitely felt proud of this help as I hadn’t done such a thing before. Plus, this process also made me learn a lot about the operation system of the laptop, which was pretty cool.
Describe a time that a piece of equipment of yours was broken (such as TV)
Things that are needed for a particular purpose or activity.
Describe a time that a piece of equipment of yours was broken (such as TV)
You should say:
What the equipment was
What the problem was
What you did after it was broken
And how you felt about it
I really want to say something about my retired laptop, which is a 13 inches Macbook Air bought in late 2013 when got sums from my first part-time job.
This laptop has lots of merits. I barely see anything counterpart that has the same good-looking and slim appearance. Plus, the system is awesome as it never slows my work, and I can definitely start it in seconds, which is extremely efficient. Do not copy or repost it. That’s probably the main reason why I chose this IT thing at the very beginning.
However, here comes the sad part. Being portable and slim isn’t always the perfect thing. When I was sitting in the Starbucks while processing my left work, I took it out from my backpack and was about to lay it on the desk with my hand. But I kind of overestimated my carefulness, you know one side of my Macbook Air just hit right on the wooden corner of the desk. When I realized it, it already got a pit on my little precious baby. When I open the lid, the display wasn’t functioning well.
Then, I immediately rushed to the Apple chain store to have it fixed. The staff told me that the display was broken and I should replace it. Luckily, it wasn’t the hard disk, otherwise, the information stored in there would be damaged, and that’s the last thing I want to see.
I paid the money and got the repaired one after like a month. Since then, I put it in a case and took it on firmly on my hands. Well, I think this is what I can do the most. Hopefully, I wouldn’t be such a careless person in the future.
Describe a time a child made you laugh
(Describe something a child did that made you laugh 描述一个小孩子做的使你开怀大笑的事情)。
Describe a time a child made you laugh
You should say:
When it was
Where you were
Who the child was
What the child did
And explain why you laughed
I would like to talk about a time I saw a funny little girl while I was shopping at a bookstore in Chaoyang District, Beijing.
I can’t remember the exact date when I visit there, but I am sure that it’s after the last Spring Festival, probably in the second week or the fourth week of the lunar new year.
I was at the Guomaotushu, which was one of the biggest bookstores in that district. You know this bookstore had quite an array of books in different disciplines, which was why I often go there to find something I that needed for both my schoolwork and leisure That day was a little bit interesting because there were way more novels and cartoon booklets on sale at the main hall. Because of this, the bookstore had gathered lots of readers there. I was not an exception and got into the crowd and started reading some of those books.
It was during that time, I saw a little girl, around six or seven years old, with her father looking for some books. The girl picked up a book to read, and little did I know that it was a small book of dirty jokes. Just as I was about to leave, I heard that girl asking her dad: “What’s the meaning of XXX?” The last word she blurted out was so erotic and somewhat nasty. I was literally about to laugh out loud. The thing was that there were several readers near us, and all of them started quietly chuckling, which made the situation quite hilarious.
Well, the reason why I laughed was that this situation made her father difficult to give an explanation to his daughter. You know, this innocent girl actually knew nothing about the word, nor did she understand that dirty joke, but all of us nearby actually did. And if the girl knew it as well, I think that would be even more embarrassing.
Describe a teenager you know 描述一个你认识的青少年
Describe a teenager you know
You should say:
Who he or she is
How you got to know him or her
What you usually do together
And explain how you feel about him or her
The teenager I am going to tell you is my cousin, whose name is Xiaoming. He is 17 years old and over 180 centimeters, which makes me feel like a dwarf when standing beside him. He is a senior high school student and is preparing for the university entrance exam next year.
Although he is my cousin, I did not meet him until this summer vacation. Do not copy or repost it. He and his parents live in Hainan, the most southern province in China, thousands of miles away from here, and they rarely come back. But this year is my grandpa’s 80th birthday, which is a very important event in Chinese culture, so they set aside their work, took a plane and returned to their hometown. That is when I saw my brother and we soon got familiar with each other.
I should say we have a wonderful time together. We were both addicted to a cell phone game called Wangzherongyao, where you team up with four other players and try to destroy the base of the other side. I had to admit he is a pro. Under his guidance, we had never been defeated, which was unbelievable. We were indulged in the feelings of victory and sometimes even forgot to eat.
It is a pity he had to return to Hainan after the summer vacation. I am sure I will miss him. But luckily, we can still play the game together.
Describe a team where you were a member
Describe a team where you were a member
You should say:
What it was like
Why you joined it
What you did in it
And explain how you felt about it
Well, a team where I became a member was called NX Astronomy Association.
That was the only team that recruited astronomy enthusiasts on our school campus. The main purpose of the team was to educate more people about astronomy.
The reason why I joined this team was that I was a huge fan of space and it’s extraterrestrial intelligence. So, I just get registered the moment I bumped into this association hoping that I could learn more about the topics about astronomy.
Well, initially, what we did was getting some training about basic knowledge of everything around astronomy, for example, what the Milky Way Galaxy looked like and how far it was from the Earth to Mars and so on. But, after several months, things got even more interesting. We were invited to use some advanced telescopes to do some exploration of the space with the knowledge we took from the previous training. Then, we even did some tutoring as volunteers to teach other schoolmates on how to use those pieces of equipment.
I felt like it was the most rewarding experience that I ever had in my college life. I was grateful that I got the hands-on experience in the astronomical filed.
Describe a successful small company you know 描述一家成功的小公司
Describe a successful small company you know
You should say
What it is
How you know it
How it becomes successful
How you feel about it
A successful small company that I know is called Heytea, which is founded by Nie Yunchen, who was a young gentleman born after 1990 in China.
Heytea has now been one of the most well-received milk tea brands in China. It has an array of products made of milk and tea. The biggest news I’ve heard about this Heytea is that a customer has waited for almost 7 hours in line to get one cup of their milk tea, which was really a heated discussion on the Internet.
I didn’t know this brand till a friend of mine told me this crazily long customer lining. Then, I went to one of their stores to have a taste. The flavor didn’t give me a huge surprise, actually. But, I was indeed satisfied with their customer service at that time. The cashier was nice and gave me some recommendations on what to choose from their products.
Well, I think one of the reasons why it becomes successful is that the owner, Nie, had total devotion to de Heytea’s product development that tries to satisfy customers’ appetites. Most importantly, I think Heytea has an excellent marketing team that has promoted this brand to a higher level and made it well-known by more people than their competitors.
I am very surprised by their instant fame, and I hope they could continue providing good products to their customers.
Describe a subject you used to dislike but now have interest in
Describe a subject you used to dislike but now have interest in
You should say:
What the subject is
Why you disliked it
What you are interested in now
And explain why you become interested in it
I would like to talk about Classical Chinese, which was a subject that I hated in middle school but now favor the most.
Actually, we had our Classical Chinese course since the first day our middle school, it’s been quite a while. But I somehow couldn’t pick up any interest from it. It might be the reason that my Chinese teacher was extremely harsh to us, you know, she sometimes punished students by not allowing them to have dinner if we didn’t manage to recite the entire piece of article learned from the last course, which was quite discouraging and made me feel sick about learning Chinese.
This kind of reluctance in learning Chinese has been with me for years until I came to study in college, where I got much exposure to Classical Chinese literature in different genres. This Chinese literature, especially during the early period of the Republic of China, has enabled me to have a bigger picture of the world. For example, John C.H. Wu, who was a Chinese jurist and writer, wrote some annotations for Tao Te Ching and other traditional Chinese work, which helped me discover the beauty of Chinese and the culture behind the language.
I think the main reason why I become interested in this subject is that I have realized the power of the Chinese language. It is a language that helped contain a lot of ancient Chinese wisdom. But, unfortunately, it seems that most of the Chinese people don’t know much about it, and they lost direct contact with those wise ancestors.
Describe a sport you want to try for the first time
Describe a sport you want to try for the first time
You should say:
What it is
How you would learn it
What equipment is needed
And explain why you would like to try it
The sport I would like to try in the future is sailing. It is a sport that uses wind rather than engines to power sails and propel the boat forward. Unlike windsurfing and surfing, the sport takes place in an enclosed boat rather than on a board.
I want to try it in Qingdao, a coastal city in the northeast of China. It is the place where the sailing competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was held and it is also the place where I first saw sailing ships in reality. Back then, I was standing on a trestle bridge stretching into the sea and accidentally found that a large number of sails were ported in a harbor nearby. Their white sails glittered under the sun.
I guess it would be easy to get it to move. After all, even if you do not do anything, as long as you leave the harbor, the wind will blow you away. But it must take a lot of practice and skills to make the full use of the wind power and steer the vessel towards a certain direction. Otherwise, it would not be listed on the events of the Olympic Games.
I want to do this because I think it is a romantic sport. Imagine you are sailing on the surface of the ocean, far away from the city, and troublesome on the land, feeling the breeze stroking against your face, and enjoying the sunshine. What a terrific experience it would be.
Describe a sport that you have watched (on TV) before and you want to try
Describe a sport that you have watched (on TV) before and you want to try
You should say:
What it is
When you first watched the sport
What you like about the sport
And explain why you would like to try this sport
Well, a sport I have watched before and I really want to try is the curling, which is uncommon here in China but is really interesting for me.
I got to know this sport when I was watching the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games during my primary school time. You know there was actually a bunch of competitive events, like swimming, ping-pong, weightlifting, and something like that. But, there’s the one that’s quite eye-catching when I was changing channels to look for something interesting. Do not copy or repost it. You know, I was so curious about what they were actually doing when several players using a kind of long stick to fiercely kind of scratch the surface of the floor while they were ice skating.
I actually didn’t have a clue about what was that until I saw the subtitles of the broadcast when the competition came to an end. What I am really into this sport is that players kind of scratch the ice surface so that the round stone lunges smoothly. Generally, it’s quite rare to see some similar activities like that.
I think the reason why I would love to try this sport is that it can really help enhance my physical condition as it requires lots of energy to make the stone pass through the gate from the adversary part.
Describe a special hotel you have stayed in
Describe a special hotel you have stayed in
You should say:
Where it is
What it is like
Why you went there
And how you felt about it
A special hotel where I have stayed and want to talk about is called Secret Cliff, which is located in Sanya, Hainan Province.
The hotel looks like a very special resort, which has many houses with large floor-to-ceiling windows allowing guests to appreciate the ocean and the sky. To be honest, I didn’t expect this design to be that satisfying. However, after my first day staying there, I just couldn’t live without it. You know, in my life, I would never forget the stunning sunset view that I got from the inside of the house.
I went there because this hotel has a very good reputation for treating its guests and was rated No.1 on a big online hotel booking website. Moreover, its price was reasonable compared to other hotels of the same standard.
I felt my stay in that special hotel was quite meaningful. I knew other hotels were trying to replicating that same experience in the market. However, that unique location plus the good service of the hotel truly stood out. And, if I have a chance in the future, I definitely would like to go back to enjoy that place again.
Describe a special day that you remember well
Describe a special day that you remember well
You should say:
Where you were
Who you were with
What you did
And explain why you remember it well

The special day that I am going to tell you is about three months ago when I just moved into a new apartment. It was located in the city center, with convenient transport. There were a supermarket and a shopping mall just across the street. The room was decorated in a concise, modern style, without complex ornaments.
According to tradition, I should invite friends to have a small party to celebrate the movement. So I called my best friend, whom I have known from a very early age and other classmates, and set the party date on Saturday when everybody was free.
Besides the normal eating and drinking, we also cook a kind of traditional Chinese food, Fagao, which was made of flour, sugar, and dates. This kind of food had a propitious name, where Fa means fortune in Chinese and Gao means prosperous. It conveyed my friends’ best wishes to me.
The party was wonderful. The food was delicious and the preparing process was hilarious. We had a good time. We talked about what happened to each other recently, and our dreams and futures. It provided a good opportunity to enhance our friendship.
Describe a skill that you think you can teach other people
Describe a skill that you think you can teach other people
You should say
What it is
When you learned it
How you can teach others
And how you feel about this skill
The skill that I think I can teach others is photography. To be more specific, it is about how to make people look prettier in the photos we take with cellphones. It involves a series of techniques, like adjusting the pose of the model, choosing the best background, angle and light, and perfecting the picture using the applications installed in the phone.
I acquired this skill about two years ago. My best friend had been very picky about the photos of herself and what I had taken never satisfied her. So to please her and show how I cared about her, I read a lot of books about photography and watched numerous videos. After several months of hard-working, I finally mastered this skill. Now, whenever she wants a picture of herself, I am her first choice. She said she looked far more beautiful in the photos than in the reality.
I think the best way to teach others this skill is through practice and feedback. I mean I will first ask them to take a photo, and then give comments about the mistakes they have made and advice about how to improve them. And we will repeat these two steps until we get a satisfactory one. After several times, they should know how to produce a perfect photo by themselves.
I think this skill is really practical. Now most of us have smartphones, and have developed the habit of taking photos and then sharing it on social media. A good photo can win a large number of likes and greatly satisfy our vanity.
Describe a skill that took you a long time to learn
Describe a skill that took you a long time to learn
You should say:
What it was
When you learned it
Why it took you so much time to learn
And how you felt about it
The skill that I going to tell you is roller skating. It is a form of recreational activity as well as a sport. Basically, it is traveling on surfaces with roller skates. It is now quite popular. You can see many children practicing it in front of shopping malls, at squares or even on the streets.
I first saw it on TV when I was in the secondary school and was attracted. Do not copy or repost it. I begged my father to buy me one. When the pair of shoes arrived, I could not wait to put them on. It was much harder than I thought. I could not even stand steadily without holding something and put my whole weight on it. As long as I let it go, I fell, sometimes forward, sometimes backward. It really hurt.
But I did not give up. I found a quiet narrow street with few people passing by. I leaned on the walls and moved my feet very carefully and slowly. One step, two steps. I was so happy. But the moment I got rid of the wall, I fell again. I practiced from day to day and observed the movements of professional players and tried to imitate them. After three months’ hard training, I finally mastered this skill.
Feeling the breeze against my face and the falling back of sceneries around me, I was really excited. My effort finally paid off.
Describe a situation when you don’t have enough time(想做)没时间做的事情
Describe something you want to do but you do not have enough time 或者Describe something you want to do but don’t have time for(描述一件你想做但没有时间做的事情)。
Describe a situation when you don’t have enough time
You should say:
What it is
Why you would like to do it
How easy or difficult is it to do it
And explain why you don’t have time for it
Something I desire to do but don’t have time to do is getting a scuba diving license.
Scuba diving is a kind of dangerous sport to newbies, so a license is supposed to be a professional preparation for amateurs to dive freely in the sea. To do that, you need to get three to four days for the training. That’s just for one level of the certificate, there’re at least two more advanced ones.
One of the biggest reasons why I want to be trained for a certificate is that I hope one day I could join with my friend Jack who is a scuba diving lover so that we could have more adventures in the sea and I will be less fearful with a companion. Plus, I am a person who has a weakness to sea creatures, which are the cuties animals to me.
You know, right now I’m concentrating on my own studies in school, and it’s about one more year to fish. At least, in this coming school year, I wouldn’t be able to make this little dream come true. But, hopefully, I could go to Thailand to learn that license training course right after my graduation.
Describe a situation when you celebrated your achievement
Describe a situation when you celebrated your achievement
You should say:
What you did
When you celebrated it
Who you celebrated it with
And explain how you felt about it
A situation when I celebrated my achievement was after I got my offer from my ideal university several years ago.
The moment I got this thrilling offer, my parents decided to set a grand dinner to invite friends and relatives to come and celebrate. You know, they have been waiting this time for quite a long time.
It was on a summer day in the third year of my senior high school. I remember there were around 30 tables of guests from different places. My best friends also came to celebrate with me on that day. Well, my job during the grand dinner was mainly about talking. You know, I was supposed to deliver a mini-speech in front of all the audiences to show my gratitude to both my parents and friends for their strong caring and support. After the speech session, my parents and I went to different tables to drink a toast to them, which was not an easy thing.
Honestly, I felt quite exhausted after this event as I was busy welcoming and serving those guests all day long. However, that day was quite meaningful and rewarding to me. I have learned a lot from this celebration. I wouldn’t be able to understand how lucky I was being a person who received a lot of love from others if I didn’t participate in hosting this event of celebration.
Describe a short trip you often take but do not like 不喜欢的短途旅行
Describe a short trip you often take but do not like
You should say
Where you go
When you go there
Why you go there
And explain why you do not like the trip
I am going to tell you a trip that I undertook nearly every day in the last two months and will continue conducting in the next half year. It is a trip from my school to the company where I have an internship.
As a junior in the university, I have only one year left to complete my study and then I would enter the competitive labor market, trying my best to find a decent job. To polish my resume and gain some practical experience, I have got myself an intern position in Baidu, a tech-giant in China.
Although this opportunity was very precious and wining this position did earn me some admiration from my classmates, the working life is not pleasant at all. Since the company is not located in the same district as my school, I have to take nearly 40 minutes’ bus to commute to and from the workplace, which means I need to get up at 6.30 in the morning to avoid being late and would not return to my dormitory until 7 o’clock in the evening, really toilsome.
Another reason why I do not like the trip is the perpetual crowd in the bus. As you can see, my commuting time coincides with other employees in the city. Whenever I step into the bus, it is already pretty full. In fact, I have to shove through the crowd to find me a place to stand in the back and body contact with strangers is inevitable.
Describe a short term job you want to have in a foreign country描述一份你想做的国外短期工作
Describe a short term job you want to have in a foreign country
You should say
What the job is
Where you want to do it
How you knew it
And explain why you want to do it
A short term job I wan to do in another country is actually doing some basic tasks as a cashier in a fast-food chain store such as the KFC or Mcdonald’s.
The job mainly involves some services like helping the customers order the meals they want and to receive and pay out the money. Apart from that, I would probably also need to do some teamwork such as designing a promo activity with my coworkers and acting as a liaison between team members.
My ideal place to do this job is somewhere in New Zealand, where I know there’s a Working Holiday program for global youths each year. Within this program, candidates are permitted to work in any company to do some basic work for a short period of time, which usually lasts about 6 months to a year.
I knew this program from a piece of news on Wechat, telling us that students from China are also eligible to apply.
Well, I think the main reason why I’d like to have this job is that I want to travel to Newzealand which is one of my favorite countries. Also, through this program, I am able to support myself during my stay in that country. So, why not?
Describe a school you went to in your childhood
Describe a school you went to in your childhood
You should say:
Where it was
what it was like
what you learned there
and how you felt about it
I am going to tell you about my primary school which I attended like 13 or 14 years ago. It was located on the southern border of my city, and actually, you would not be blamed if you say it was in the countryside. Several bungalows were scattered around and the school, with 4 floors, was the highest building in the area.
The school’s history can be traced back to 20 years ago, and it had not been renovated ever since. So as you can imagine, the facilities were quite out of date. There was no football field, no basketball court, let alone the plastic racetracks. And the playground was basically an open field with wild grasses and flowers.
I finished my primary education there, learning basic mathematics, Chinese, Science and so on. I should say the study there laid a firm foundation for my further education. Teachers helped me find the amusement of studying and reading, which turned me into a self-motivated, enthusiastic student.
The school was demolished several years ago and a brand new one has been established on the original site. Although the conditions of the school were quite poor and it would certainly not meet today’s education standard, I do miss it. I had a wonderful time there and it bore my valuable childhood memory.
Describe a risk you have taken which had a positive result
Describe a risk you have taken which had a positive result
You should say:
What it was
Why you took it
What the result was
And how you felt about it
A risk I have taken which had a positive result is volunteering to become a delivery guy in my community during the COVID-19 period.
The outbreak of the coronavirus has tremendously affected the entire world, and our small community is no exception. One of the issues caused by this unprecedented time was that lots of packages being stuck at the main gate of our community as non-residents were not allowed to enter including the delivery men. Our committee has then initiated a volunteering activity, which was to get those packages to the doors of the receivers, and I was proudly a member of it granted that there might be a risk of getting infected.
Well, the main reason why I took the risk was that I simply wanted to make the most of my daily life. You know, I just couldn’t stand the tedious daily indoor life. So, helping others to deliver the items would be meaningful.
The volunteering activity took about two weeks. I managed to safely get every designated packages delivered, and ended up being physically healthy! What’s more exciting was that I kind of became a superhero after being praised by my community on their bulletin board.
You know, I felt that this was one of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences in my life, and I definitely hope I would never volunteer in my community because of the virus again.
Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in 喜欢待的安静的地方
Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in
You should say
Where it is
How you knew it
How often you go there
What you do there
And explain why you like the place
The quiet place I am going to tell you is Erlitou Site Museum of the Xia capital. As its name suggests, it is a museum focusing on Xia, the first recorded dynasty lasting from about 2070 B.C. to 1600 B.C. Although it is in the suburb of my city, I actually learnt about it from TikTok. Because of its special shape like an ancient key, many people go there to take pictures.
Despite the fact that I have been there several times, I would still be amazed by this huge building that was erecting lonely in the middle of the wilderness. Even standing outside, I can feel a sense of vicissitudes. In it are displayed a range of items found in the archaeological sites nearby. Most of them are made of jade, clay, and bronze. I used to think people in such a primitive era must have devoted all their energy to survive, but from the various decorations on the items, it seems that they had developed a high level of aesthetic.
Although it is my favorite spot, I do not go there on a regular basis. This is mainly because of its remote location and inconvenient transport. There is only one bus route connecting my home and this museum. You have to wait for ages to see one approaching. Driving is not a reasonable choice either. There are 48 traffic lights on the way, which form a test of your patience.
But it is always on the top of the list when I need a place to relax and find my inner peace. You know, surrounded by objects whose history could be traced back to thousands of years ago, I would find all the things bothering me lost significance. After all, they and I would eventually vanish into the thin air.
