Describe a public place that you think needs improvements
Describe a public place that you think needs improvements
You should say:
Where this public place is
What it is like
Why you think it needs improvements
And how to make it better
The place I’m going to talk about is the train station of Xi’an, I mean the old one, not the newly built CRH(China Railway High Speed) train station. The very last time I went there was actually last summer when I was visiting an old classmate of mine in College.
The appearance of the city has changed, it’s been better than before, except for the train station where most visitiors from home and abroad could drop by. The time I got out of train, the stinky smell of urine with a mix of some smoke just gently gave me a welcome kiss. You just couldn’t imagine how sad I was when I saw a city where I have once lived for 4 years just seemingly remained the same as it was in terms of the public sanitary condition. Do not copy or repost it. What makes me feel even less comfortable was that theft and fraud was still constantly seen there. For example, leading you to a well known 3-star hotel which proved to be just a cheap copy.
I’m not sure what the local government would be thinking about this. Maybe they’ve made some effort in the improvement of the public environment like setting up another brand new train station with higher level public environment. Whereas, the old one still needs some improvements for the sake of the image of the city. It would be really helpful if the government make some laws to regulate the problems. Like what the government in Singapore does, giving them heavy fines, then I guess the situation would become better.
Describe a public building you enjoyed visiting
Describe a public building you enjoyed visiting
You should say
When you went there
Who you went there with
What it was like
And explain why you liked going there
The place I am going to tell you is a small library that has just been constructed, funded by the government. It is located in a huge park next to my community, about 15 minutes’ walk away. But since I rarely took a walk in it, I actually knew this place from an article posted by my neighbors on social media. It not only gave an explicit introduction to the facilities the library was equipped with, but also involves a large number of pictures about what it looked like.
The library is in the center of the park. Even from the pictures, you can tell the environment around is wonderful. Various trees and flowers embrace the building and an artificial lake lies in front of it. moreover, since it is separated from the road by plants, it is also very quiet。
The library does not occupy a huge area, only 40-50 square meters. Unlike the normal buildings, which are made of concrete and steel, most of the library is made of glass. And to avoid the sunshine turning it into a warm house, it has been equipped with thick curtains. In it, five bookshelves are arranged in the center and about 12 tables are laid against the walls.
I enjoyed visiting it because I felt it would be a perfect place to read and write. Although there is a study in my home, the distractions are just too many. I cannot resist the temptation of video games, TV programs, and computers. By contrast, in the library, surrounded by people craving for knowledge, I am forced to concentrate on study.
Describe a prize you want to win
Describe a prize you want to win
You should say:
What this prize is
How you knew about it
What you will do to win it
And explain why you want to win it
A prize that I desire to win is the first place of the 21 Century English Speech Competition, which is considered one of the most well-known English language competitions in China.
The one who gets the first place will be offered a chance to attend the International Public Speaking Competition held by the English Speaking Union in the United Kingdom, and definitely will also have an opportunity to go sight-seeing in the U.K.
I got to know about this competition and its tempting prize when I was in my first year of college. You know, I was majoring in English Language and Literature, and at that time to get the Championship is considered the coolest thing. I remember a fellow student of our college has got the first place in that competition and she literally rocked the entire university.
Well, to nail it is not that easy. I will have to put a lot of effort and time into practicing English except for the daily lessons that I receive at school. For instance, I need to enhance my language skills and focus heavily on the techniques of delivering speeches. Apart from that, I assume reading something about everything is essential because you won’t become a good speaker unless you are a good reader.
The reason why I long for this prize is not that I really want this fame but that I regard this prize as one of my long-term goal and testimonial of language learning. I know it’s hard but I would spare no effort in getting this prize.
Describe a present you received which was made by hand描述你收到的手工礼物
Describe a present you received which was made by hand
You should say:
What it was
What it was like
When you received it
Who gave it to you
And explained how are you felt about the present
A gift that I received which was made by hand was a piece of soap, which was given by my friend Wang Lei on my 16thbirthday.
I remember I invited my intimate friends to have a birthday party at my home. And there was the present opening moment, so I got this little thing. It was brought to me by Wang from New Zealand where he was having a working holiday trip. It was a yellow hexagon shape soap, which was made of something I didn’t know but was told that a mixture of a very special kind of honey that only can be produced in New Zealand. I was also told by him that it has some curative effects and protection for the skin.
I didn’t see too much difference in it compared with some Korean soaps bought by my mother. But, after I applied it to my face and washed it away, that sudden sense of coolness made me feel very soothing.
You know, I was pretty thankful that my friend sent me this little but useful soap as a gift. From that on, I was very much keen on using it and became a regular customer of this product.
Describe a practical skill you learned
Describe a practical skill you learned
You should say:
What it was
When you learned it
Why you learned it
And how you felt about it
A practical skill that I have mastered recently is driving, which is quite important I guess when I go abroad to further my studies.
It’s a C1 driving license that enables me to drive on the road as a qualified driver. I learned this skill at the driving school affiliated to my university in Beijing last summer. I clearly remember it was a sultry July. We were supposed to sit for a series of exams, including the knowledge test and two road tests. The training was intensive and the coach was somewhat impatient and strict to us. I had to follow his instruction attentively and practiced it at least two hours under the sun every day. What’s made me feel difficult was that I had to stand by and wait for my turn for a long time, which was time-consuming. Anyway, I managed to pass this whole test with my effort and time.
The reason why I learned this driving skill is that I knew that I would be driving in Australia, which is the destination for my study abroad. You know, nearly every friend who has studied or lived there told me how important it is to be able to drive in that nation. It’s like a vehicle is your second feet without which you can’t go farther.
I’m really glad that I have mastered this driving skill. I know I will need to pass another driving test in Australia, but I think it’s would be a piece of cake since I am at least qualified for driving here.
Describe a popular product (e.g. food, handicraft…) made in your region
比如该题就提示了大家可以说某种事物或者handicraft(手工艺品)等等。
Describe a popular product (e.g. food, handicraft…) made in your region
You should say:
What it is
What it is like
How it is made
And explain why it is popular
Well, a popular product made in my region is REGANMIAN, which is a kind of noodle made in Hubei Province, especially in Wuhan which is my hometown.
Unless any noodles in the northern part of China, REGANMIAN is mainly severed for breakfast purpose. The texture of the noodle is also quite different than those in the north. It is not chewy but still has its toughness. I usually eat it in a breakfast restaurant on my way to school.
It’s not that hard for anyone to make this kind of noodle. You just put them into the boiling water for around 20 seconds and get them out with a strainer. Then you can add some pepper oil to add extra flavor, and some sesame paste which is important for the taste.
Well, I guess the reason why it’s so popular is that REGANMIAN is so tasty. You know, the flavor suits the needs of the people in Hubei Province and even in other regions. Another reason why I think it’s well-received is that the price of the noodle is affordable for the average customers. Usually, a bowl of REGANMIAN only costs less than 7 RMB which is cheaper than most noodles in the north.
Describe a popular person
You should say:
Who the person is
What kind of person he or she is
Why you think this person is popular
How this person influences the public
A popular person that I want to say is Jinxing, who is a very famous ballerina and modern dancer in China. A lot of people knew her started from the news that she became one of the first few transsexuals to be recognized as a woman by the government in China.
Actually, I wasn’t familiar with her until I saw a video clip in which she was being interviewed by the media in the World Economic Forum in 2017. She was talking something about the transgender issues with two hosts and many other business talents and guests. At first sight, I thought she was just another successful person like what we read in the magazines. However, the way she talks and those true and spontaneous words of homosexuality she blurted out really touched me. Do not copy or repost it. I guess everyone on the spot were the same, you know, the prejudice that was deeply rooted in our heart about LGBT and things like that were soon gone with the wind.
The reason why I think she is so popular from home and abroad is that she has been brave enough to step out of the obstacles that she got and set an example, as a role model actually, for those who are struggling with those sensitive issues in a traditional cultural environment.
When the dialogue finished, everyone stood up and gave her a great round of applause. Yes, I assume that she deserves it. Her personal life has definitely changed the view of love, marriage, and life principles of the whole young generation in China.Life is with traditions and conservative things, but it’s about the life that you could only live once, right?
Describe a polite person you know
Describe a polite person you know
You should say:
Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
What he/she is like
And explain why you think he/she is polite
A polite person I want to talk about is Wang Xiao, who is a friend that I knew from an international contest held in Beijing. It was actually a contest in the format of a conference where attendees compete against each other by expressing their own opinions about global affairs. It’s pretty much like Model United Nations.
I knew him from the first day at the conference. But, it was during the final day that we had a deep communication. Xiao had a very professional skill in negotiating and broad knowledge of international affairs. I remember the first day she came to the Beijing International Conference Center, which is the place we had that contest. She wore a suit and carried a very small suitcase, from which I could see that she just came here from the airport. You know, girls sometimes have a lot of stuff in the luggage, but she wasn’t one of them. So, I thought she must have a simplistic lifestyle.
Well, one experience deeply left in my mind. You know, she was taller than me. When I asked to take a picture with her, she said sure and immediately took off her high heels to adjust her height. That was probably the biggest reason why I think she was polite. You know, never in my life had I met a person who could have such nice behavior. Another reason why I think she was polite was that no matter whom she talked to, she always wore a smile on her face. That kind of positive energy really touched me.
I wish I could someday become a person like her, who is caring and compassionate.
Describe a plan in your life (that is not related to work or study)
Describe a plan in your life (that is not related to work or study)
You should say
What it is about
Why you made it
What you need to do first
And explain how you would feel if it is successful
The plan I am going to tell you is to win the championship of the Top 10 Singers organized annually by my university. It is a quite influential competition, whose final would be held in the biggest auditorium in my school, which can accommodate 800 people. Students would scramble for tickets, and start to line up in front of the gate hours before the show.
It is actually very difficult to ignore the competition as a student. Its posters are everywhere, on the side of the streets, in the elevators, on the walls of the teaching buildings, and on the notice boards on the ground floor of the dormitory. Even when I return, I can hear my roommates talking about what happened during last year’s competition.
Considering its significant influence and popularity, the competition must be pretty fierce. So the first thing I will do is to ask my friend, XXX, for help. He is a student studying in Sichuan Conservatory of Music, majoring in popular singing. I need his professional knowledge to detect the flaws in my singing and perfect them. I presume with his guidance, my odds to win the game would dramatically increase.
I think I will be overwhelmed if my plan does work out. Ever since I was a child, there have been many people flattering my singing. I want to see whether it is really that awesome like what they have said. Besides, if I obtain the championship, I will become a celebrity in my university, which would greatly satisfy my vanity.
Describe a place you remember well that is full of colors
Describe a place you remember well that is full of colors
You should say:
Where it is
What it is like
What it is used for
And explain why you remember it well
A colorful place that I remember well is a KTV room on a cruise to Japan while I was on vacation with my family last year.
It is on a gigantic Italian cruise. I couldn’t remember which floor it was on. If my memory is correct, it should be somewhere between the first and the second floor.
The KTV room was like a theatre that has two layers of seats surrounding an oval podium. It was not big. But, once I was inside the room, I felt like it’s spacious enough for people to sing and dance together.
Its main purpose was for disco, and I didn’t even know that it had just been converted into a KTV room several days before we were on board. The most fascinating thing about this place was that it was equipped with a myriad of light bulbs that gave out various colors following with the beat of the music. At first, I felt it was just dazzling, but once I was fully immersed in the environment, I felt like I was on top of the world and just couldn’t stop the feeling.
Well, I think the reason why I remember it well is that the light effect was just so amazing while we were singing and dancing. That’s probably the most impressive and enjoyable time I have ever had when being in a KTV room.
Describe a place you have visited that has been affected by pollution
Describe a place you have visited that has been affected by pollutions
You should say:
Where it was
When you went there
What kind of pollution you saw
And explain how you felt about it
A place I’ve been to that had pollution problems is Qinghai Lake, which is located in the west of China.
I went there three years ago. You know, at that time, I was just about to start my university life, my parents advised me to have a trip nearby because they thought that I wouldn’t have much free time thereafter. You know, Qinghai lake was not far from my university and was the largest lake in China, so it’s definitely a must-see place.
We had a road trip to the spot, and the moment I saw the lake, I was thrilled by the picturesque scene. You know, the lake had actually two distinct blue colors. Lots of rape flowers turned yellow. Oh, and the snow moutians at the far side silhouetted by the bright sky also brought me a sense of mystery.
However, when I get closer to the lake, it was totally another scene. I saw lots of disserted bottles and plastic bags scattered around and on the lake. When I approached to the water, I could even sense a suffocating smell. I didn’t quite understand why it was like this.
I felt so sad about the pollution there. Are those caused by careless tourists? I just couldn’t believe there were even those people who could break his heart to ruin such as a stunning natural beauty.
Describe a place where you are able to relax

The government has introduced various plants, constructed a rubber dam, planted a huge number of peonies, and set up a wide range of entertainment facilities there, including is a 400-meter standard plastic track, six badminton courts and several table tennis tables. You can always see crowds of people around these facilities, lining up to play or simply stand there to watch.
I like to go there in the evenings after dinner. Normally I would take a walk along the river until reaching the boundary and then turn around to return home. After a whole day’s intensive study, it is a good way to relax and keep healthy.
Well, I really love this park. It is not easy to find such a big area of vegetation in the bustling and crowded city. With fragrance of flowers and faint scent of grasses and trees, I feel refreshed from the inside out.
Describe a place (not your home) where you read and write
Describe a place (not your home) where you read and write
You should say:
Where it is
How often you go there
Who you go there with
And explain how you feel about this place
Speaking of a place that I read and write, the first thing that pops up into my mind is one of the libraries in my university named Kang Sung.
Kang Sung.
It is located in the central part of our campus and has been regarded as the landmark for all pedestrians for decades. If you visit my university, you can’t miss it.
I go there pretty much every day to either finish my assignment or do some extra readings there. There’s an area in that library building that gives us some private study rooms, which I think is perfect for group discussion.
Usually, I go there alone during the weekends. But, if it’s in the weekdays, my roommates who are also my classmates go there with me because we can team up to help each other in our studies.
I feel this place is wonderful. The reason why I think this is second to none on campus is that it has more volumes of books compared to other libraries, which allows me to check out the most crucial references for my studies whenever I want.
Describe a piece of local news that people are interested in 人们感兴趣的当地新闻
Describe a piece of local news that people are interested in
You should say
What it was about
Where you saw/heard it
Who was involved
And explain why people were interested in it
The local news I am going to tell you is that the new library in our city has finally been completed. It is made up by two large high-rise buildings connected by a sealed bridge in the air. The building on the left is where books are borrowed and returned. In it, over 1 million books are stored. The building on the right is equipped with concert halls, meeting rooms, and a cinema, where various activities can be held.
I heard the news on the same day when the library opened to the public. It was a Friday. After a day’s intensive study, I went to the canteen to have dinner by myself. It was a little bored to eat alone, so I held my cellphone with one hand and browsed through the news when I was eating. Then I saw this piece of news.
It was from a website, which focused on introducing local events, informing people of what happened in the city recently. At the top of its homepage was an article titled with “city library finally opened today”. I clicked in. There was a range of pictures of its appearance, facilities, books and people who were reading there.
It was really a piece of good news. By providing a free place for people to read books, this library would greatly promote education in our city. Citizens would also have a nice and comfortable place to do my homework and project. That was why they were interested in it.
Describe a piece of international news you recently heard
Describe a piece of international news you recently heard
You should say
What it was about
Where and when you heard it
What you were doing when you hear it
And explain how you felt about it
The international news I am going to tell you was about the presidential election of the United States. To be more specific, it was about that the back-then President Donald Trump refused to concede his failure, insisted there was a large scale of fraud during the voting process, and decided to launch a barrage of lawsuits, trying to invalidate the result.
I heard this piece of news from the news broadcast of China Radio International several months ago, when I was taking a walk in the park near my home. Ever since I started preparing for the IELTS exam, I had developed a habit of listening to this channel every day after dinner, hoping this could gradually improve my English level and help me obtain a higher band.
Because of the unparalleled influence of the United States and the sharp opposition between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, this election had drawn unprecedented attention around the world. And every day, the CRI news devoted a lot of time covering the latest development. When the victory of Biden was declared in November, I was so happy because I thought I could finally listen to something else.
Then I heard about this news. To be honest, I was quite tired of it. There were so many other things happening domestically and abroad, could not they report something more interesting or more dramatic?
Describe a piece of important news you got through a text message
Describe a piece of important news you got through a text message
You should say:
What it was
When you got it
Who you got it from
And how you felt about it
Well, a piece of important news I got through a text message was knowing the result of my CET 4 exam, which was the college English test in China.
CET 4 has been considered one of the most fundamental and crucial English language proficiency test among Chinese universities. The majority of schools in China had a policy that students should pass this exam to meet the graduation requirement.
I got this piece of news on a Monday morning last August. Actually, the result can be checked online through a website. However, I was then in an area of my grandparents’ home where there’s a bad internet connection. So, my friend Wang helped me check it and sent a text message to me telling me that I passed the exam.
I was thrilled the moment I received his text message. I hadn’t got that excited since I checked my result of Gaokao, which was the college entrance exam, and it had been two years. I was definitely grateful for the good news from Wang.
The reason why this piece of news was important was that the result meant a lot to me. First, I didn’t have to take extra time and effort to cram for it again. Second, passing this exam really gave me a sense of accomplishment, which made me feel a bit more confident in learning English.
Describe a piece of good news you heard (from TV or the Internet)
Describe a piece of good news you heard (from TV or the Internet)
You should say:
What the news was about
When you got this news
Where you got this news from
And explain why you think it was a good piece of news
A piece of good news that I heard from the Internet was that residents from other provinces of China can renew their ID cards in Beijing.
The exact policy enacted by the local government stated that people who are working or studying in Beijing but do not have Beijing Hukou, which is a Chinese household registration system, can apply to renew their ID cards in Beijing if they have legal evidence that they have been living in Beijing.
I heard about this news from the Internet when I lost my ID card one day on my way home and began to search a possible way to get a new one. You know, I’ve once heard from someone that it’s way too complex to get a new legal document like ID in a city that didn’t have your personal information stored in their local government, not to mention about this mega capital city. I felt quite worried about this situation at that time because, without my ID card, I wouldn’t be able to anything like buying a train ticket. Without a ticket to go back to my hometown, it’s impossible for me to renew it, which was a kind of dilemma.
Thank God that I got to know this news by searching the answer from Baidu, which is a Chinese online search engine. The reason why I thought it’s such a wonderful piece of good news was that it’s a savior that helped me get out of the trap. Also, I’m glad that our government has become better and better in serving its citizens in China.
Describe a piece of equipment that is important in your home
Describe a piece of equipment that is important in your home
You should say:
What it is
How often you use it
With whom you use it
And explain why it is important
A piece of equipment that I think is essential in my home is actually the refrigerator produced by Haier, which is one of the most well-received brands in China.
It is a side-by-side refrigerator that is about 2 meters tall and around one meter wide, which is bigger than most single-door ones. Our family bought this right after the covid-19 outbreak on JD, which was an online shopping platform that gave us a 10% discount.
Well, I use it with my parents as they are working from home. And, we use it literally every day. It seems like we can’t live without it. You know, all our daily meals and drinks are stored safely in that container. I should say, it is a life-saver for us during the pandemic as we won’t go out to places like grocery stores often to hunt for food.
The main reason why I feel that it is crucial to our lives is that it saves us a lot of time. You know, nearly half a month of foods can be kept there, which also means that it greatly reduces our time getting exposed to the densely populated shopping area where there’s a higher possibility to get infected with the virus.
Describe a piece of clothing you enjoy wearing
Describe a piece of clothing you enjoy wearing
You should say:
Where you bought it
How often you wear it
What it is like
And explain why you enjoy wearing it
A piece of clothing I’m keen on wearing is actually a woolen hoodie that I bought at Stanford University.
Last fall, I went to Standford with my school team for a robot competition there. When we finished the event, we were guided to the store and I found this blue woolen hoodie with a Stanford LOGO.
Honestly, I didn’t plan to buy some memorabilia there. But, the weather was getting colder at that time, I had to buy a piece of heavy clothing to keep warm. So, this blue hoodie drew my attention. I picked it up and touched it to make sure it’s heavy enough. After I tried it on in the fitting room, I checked it out at the counter without any hesitation. Fun fact was that I almost wore it every day while I was in California even when it’s getting dirty. Now, I still wear it quite often.
Well, the reason why I enjoy wearing it is that this hoodie is comfy and helps me keep warm during a cold day in the fall. Plus, its LOGO makes this hoodie somewhat meaningful, you know, at least it helps me keep the precious memory of my days at Standford.
Describe a picture or photograph you like in your room
Describe a picture or photograph you like in your room
You should say:
What is in it
Where it is
How you got it
And explain why you like it
A picture that I enjoy in my room is actually an artsy shot taken several years ago with my parents.
If my memory’s correct, it’s taken during the summer in 2015 when I just finished my college entrance examination. My parents thought that I was gonna leave them for college in another city and really wanted to take a good photo to kind of record our memory being together. Plus, we hadn’t really taken serious photos before. So, it’s would be a nice try.
My mom thought that we should go get the perfect photo since it’s our first time. So, we searched for the information online and found a photo shop that’s rated the top in our city. The shop was located right in the central business district of our city. It’s a little bit far away from where we were living. So, my father drove us to the shop, which took us around 2o minutes.
You know, It was actually a family portrait. In that picture, my father was wearing a military uniform as he’s a military officer. My mother and I were wearing Tangzhuang, which was a kind of costume in the Tang Dynasty. It sounds very formal, right? But, we were actually having funny poses.
Well, the reason why I am quite into this picture is that it’s the first that I was having fun with my family taking an artistic photo. I knew it’s tiring while preparing the makeups, costumes, and gestures. But, that’s really an unforgettable experience in my life.
